Kennedy honors Hutcheson, Strait, Jahlas

Allie Hutcheson, Courtney Strait and Josh Jahlas have been named the Athletes of the Year at Kennedy High School.

Hutcheson has excelled in volleyball and soccer with the Cougars. She was named to the Iowa All-State Elite Team in volleyball this past season and helped Kennedy finish third at the state tournament for the third straight year.

Hutcheson, a goal keeper in soccer, has set school records for shutouts and fewest goals allowed. She is the 2012 Kennedy valedictorian with a 4.247 GPA and will attend the University of Northern Colorado on a full volleyball scholarship. She was academic all-state in both sports.

Strait was named first team all-state in basketball this past season and led Class 4A in scoring at 20.7 points per game during the regular season. She also was named the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference and the Metro.

Strait has been the starting shortstop for the Kennedy softball team, ran on the track team and has received academic awards. She will attend Truman State on a basketball scholarship.

Jahlas has been a team captain in football, basketball and track at Kennedy also plays on the baseball team. He was named first team all-state in football and will play in the Iowa Shrine Bowl this summer.

Jahlas is a class salutatorian with a 4.1 GPA and has been named academic all-state. He ran at the state track meet and in the Drake Relays, helping the Cougars finish third in the shuttle hurdle relay at Drake this year. He will be joining the Iowa State football program as a preferred walk-on.
