IOWA CITY -- Hannah Petersen scattered two hits while striking out seven and Carson Burgart hit a two-out single in the fifth inning to drive in the only run of the game and No. 8 Jefferson beat No. 5 Iowa City West, 1-0, Tuesday in the opener of a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader.

West came back to win the nightcap, 7-3.

In the opener, Jefferson's Maddie Koolbeck drew a two-out walk to start the fifth. Pinch-runner Savanah Fowler advanced to second when West pitcher Mackenzie Laux plunked Petersen.  Burgart then singled up the middle scoring Fowler.

Laux scattered two hits and struck out six.

Both pitchers were sharp early, each striking out five of the first nine batters they faced. West had runners in every inning but the first, but Petersen made pitches and the J-Hawk defense made plays. West stranded six runners.

In the nightcap,  West jumped out to a 6-0 lead. The Women of Troy took advantage of some uncharacteristic sloppy J-Hawk defense to score three in the first inning and strung together a series of base hits in the second to tack on three more.

West's Lauren Larson went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead West.  Shelly Stumpff scattered seven hits for West.

Petersen hit a three-run home run in the fourth for the J-Hawks.
