Prairie sweeps J-Hawks in MVC opener

Metro Sports Report

There were two very different types of ballgames at Cedar Rapids Prairie on Tuesday evening.

Prairie won them both, 15-12 in the opener and 10-0 in the nightcap, to sweep a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Jefferson.

There were six lead changes, 27 runs, 23 hits and 38 baserunners in the opening slugfest. Prairie trailed early 3-2, but sent 10 men to the plate in the third, scoring five runs capped by a two-run Tyler Butz double.

The J-Hawks answered right back in the top of the fourth by sending nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs on five hits to take the lead back 8-7. The teams traded runs back and forth until the game found itself even in the bottom of the sixth, 12-12.

Brayton Carlson came into the game with just one hit on the young season but found himself with a chance to drive in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth for Prairie. He did not disappoint, depositing the Dylan Jellison fastball over the left-field wall for a go-ahead three run shot. Carlson’s homer proved to be the game winner.

“I widened my stance a little bit, and kept my hands back,” Carlson said. “I just let the pitcher provide the power.”

Game two had two words to describe it: Brennan Hammer. Hammer was virtually unhittable, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out an eye-opening 13 J-Hawks over the five-inning contest.

“All my pitches were working tonight. It’s really easy to keep putting the ball over the plate when you know you have a defense behind you that can make plays,” he said.

The Hawks scored three in the first on two hits to grab the early lead. In the second inning the Hawks loaded the bases with one away and it was Carlson again, this time driving a ball over the left-field wall for a grand slam.

Prairie added three in the bottom of the fifth to win the game virtue of the 10-run rule.
