No. 4 J-Hawks crush City High

PDF

After being held to one hit and humbled by Creston in a 1-0 loss in its own tournament Saturday, Jefferson bounded back big Tuesday night at home by bombarding Iowa City High, 12-0 and 11-0.

Besides having hot bats, the fourth-ranked J-Hawks had solid pitching performances from Hannah “Pete” Petersen and Brooke Stauffer in running their season marks to 30-4 overall and 21-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

“Everything worked tonight,” said Jefferson assistant coach Nick Niemeyer. “We hit the ball well, our defense was good and we got great pitching. Two good wins.”

Niemeyer was substituting for his father Larry, who was hospitalized Friday with a bowel obstruction and is expected to be released on Wednesday. His status for Thursday’s doubleheader at Dubuque Hempstead is uncertain.

With his son and daughter Natalie in charge against the Little Hawks, the veteran coach was hardly missed. Jefferson pounded out 23 hits in the two games, both of them abbreviated because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The one error with which the J-Hawks were officially charged in the opener was a close call. But it did preserve a four-inning no-hitter for Petersen. The senior southpaw, 15-3, has allowed just 12 earned runs and opponents are barely batting .100 against her.

A first-inning dribbler down the third base line was ruled an error, but the runner was thrown out trying to steal second. Petersen coasted from there.

Meanwhile, the J-Hawks scored six runs in their half of the first as they batted through the order. Rachel Sedlacek led off with a triple to right and it was followed by a parade of five more hits. Petersen herself knocked in one run with a looping single to right and ninth-place hitter Kaitlyn Davidson brought home two more with a sharp single to center.

Jefferson scored six more runs in the fourth to end the game. Big hits in the frame came from Kenna Fry, who drove in two runs with a single to right, and from Amber Grimm, whose triple brought in two more.

In the nightcap, junior hurler Stauffer (14-1) scattered four hits over six innings. She had one scare, when the Little Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth. But then she struck out the next three batters, her only strikeouts of the night.

“I don’t usually throw a lot of strikeouts,” Stauffer said. “I always know I have a good defense behind me, so I get a lot of grounders.

“When they got all those runners on base, I guess I just stepped it up a little. Felt pretty good, too.”

The J-Hawks waited until the third inning to put any runs on the board. But once they got started, they kept pouring it on.

Davidson, Sedlacek and Kailey Drake collected consecutive singles in the third to start a three-run inning. Jefferson scored four more in the fourth on four hits, then added one in the fifth on a bloop single to right by Davidson.

Maddie Hansen opened the gates in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to left, and Carson Burgart ended the scoring with a two-run hit high over the center fielder’s head.

Jefferson, ranked fourth in the latest Class 5A poll, has three straight doubleheaders in the next week to end the regular season.
