Schemmel gets 500th win as Xavier sweeps

PDF

Xavier High School baseball coach Dave Schemmel collected his 500th career victory Friday night when the Saints swept a doubleheader from Dubuque Wahlert, 4-2 and 9-7, at Ken Charipar Field.

“We’ve had some really good ballclubs, especially here at Xavier, and every team is different,” said Schemmel. “We just try to get them ready to play and they play hard.

"The players win them," he said. "We just try to put them in a position to succeed.”

Schemmel was the head coach at Regis before becoming the coach at Xavier when the new Catholic school opened.

“Playing for Coach Schemmel’s 500th win definitely amps you up,” said junior Corbin Woods. “Everyone had an extra hop in their step tonight. It was all for Coach Schemmel.”

Xavier (20-13, 15-11) plated three runs in the third inning of the first game on RBI singles by Jake Harriott and Mitch St. Andrews for a 4-1 lead.

Tyler Hines threw six solid innings for the win, and Adam Pick shut the Golden Eagles down in the seventh for the save.

Mack Mattke collected two hits for the Saints.

The nightcap saw Xavier use five pitchers to preserve the 9-7 victory. Eric Schemmel got the start and the win, going 4 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on two hits and left in the fifth with a comfortable 6-2 lead.

The Saints added two more runs to their lead, only to have Wahlert score five times in the sixth to pull within 8-7. Xavier scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for a 9-7 edge, but it was far from over.

Wahlert loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two outs. Mattke came in to pitch for the Saints and got the final out on a strikeout.

“Was there any pressure coming into a game like that to get Coach his 500th win?  No, not really,” said Mattke. “We were just focused on getting that win and we got it.”

Woods led the Saints with three hits in the nightcap. Harriott and Zach Brown each added a pair.

Levi Nauman had a big night for the Golden Eagles (12-24, 9-17), going 5-for-7, scoring four runs and driving in three.

“We played well enough to get two wins,” said Schemmel. “I could thank a lot of players for those 500 wins."

Wahlert finished a suspended game at Kennedy Friday afternoon, losing 6-2, before facing Xavier in the doubleheader.
