Prep football prevues - Aug. 30-31

Marion opened some eyes last weekend when it routed Mount Pleasant 70-7 in a season opener at Mount Pleasant.

The win vaulted the Indians four spots, up to No. 4, in the Des Moines Register rankings.

The competition will be a little more stiff Friday when the Indians host top-ranked Decorah in a non-district game at Thomas Park.

It is the highlight game of the weekend, which opens Thursday night with Xavier playing Jefferson at Kingston Stadium and Linn-Mar at Dubuque Senior.

Here is an overview of games Thursday and Friday:

Thursday

Xavier (1-0) vs. Jefferson (0-1)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600, FM-107.5); WMT (AM-600)

TV: KCRG 9.2 (Mediacom 109, Imon 709)

Storyline - Jefferson is aching for a win after 23 straight losses, but faces a fully loaded Xavier club that posted a 41-point win a week ago. This may not be the week for the J-Hawks to get the monkey off their back.

Xavier - The Saints pounded Hempstead, 48-7, last Friday. Reggie Schulte completed 14-of-19 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns. Bryce Grimm caught five passes for 66 yards and a TD. Jim Moore and Corbin Woods caught three passes apiece and both scored TDs. Cal Stovie ran 17 times for 139 yards and a TD. The Saints had 303 yards rushing and 497 total yards. Craig Murtha and Emiliano Martinez had five tackles apiece. The Saints forced five turnovers.

Jefferson - The J-Hawks carry the longest current losing streak among Class 4A schools in the state at 23. They opened the 2012 season with a 28-7 loss at Prairie last Friday. Layne Sullivan completed 6-of-18 passes for 69 yards. Creighton Robinson rushed for 39 yards and Caught two passes. Nick O'Connell rushed for 37 yards. Hunter Kloubec caught two passes. Drake Allen had 12 tackles and Will Orr eight. Kloubec had four and intercepted a pass.

Linn-Mar (0-1) at Dubuque Senior (1-0)

Site: University of Dubuque

Time: 8:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 6 p.m.

Storyline - Linn-Mar goes on the road after suffering one of its worst losses in Coach Bob Forsyth's five-year tenure last Friday. Meanwhile, Senior posted a surprise win. Are the lessons learned in a loss to a ranked Iowa City West team enough to overcome the momentum of an emotional victory? That is the question for Linn-Mar.

Linn-Mar - The Lions opened the season with a 49-14 home loss to No. 6 Iowa City West. Rhys Davis completed 6-of-10 passes for 57 yards and ran for a team-high 86 yards. The Lions rushed for 196 yards. Ross Lembeck ran for 67 yards and a touchdown. Jon Schlotterback and Matt Meier caught two passes apiece. Lucas Meyer had 10 tackles and Dakota Digmann had eight.

Dubuque Senior - The Rams beat Waterloo West, 21-20, in overtime last Friday night. All three touchdowns were scored on the ground. Alex Duster rushed for 86 yards and a TD, Parker Hammel carried once for 14 yards and a TD, and Austin Clemens scored once. Clemens also completed 13-of-22 passes for 94 yards. Keegan Gallery caught nine passes for 65 yards. Strat Hoerner had 15 tackles and Brook Anderson had 11 stops. Ben Martin kicked three PATs.

Friday

No. 1 Decorah (1-0) at No. 4 Marion (1-0)

Site: Thomas Park

Time: 7:30 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - This week's showdown game in Class 3A, according to the rankings, is at Thomas Park. Decorah finished 11-3 a year ago and was state runnerup to Union in Class 3A. Marion missed the playoffs a year ago in a 4-5 campaign when the Indians had but eight seniors. Both teams opened last week with strong wins. This is a nondistrict game, but perhaps is more important for the Indians heading into the district portion of the schedule with momentum.

Decorah - The Vikings opened with a 35-7 drubbing of Waverly-Shell Rock last Friday. The Vikings rushed for 289 yards and four touchdowns. Holt Johansen carried eight times for 107 yards and a touchdown. Jacob Kvale threw only nine passes and completed three for 16 yards. Andy Hovden had 13 tackles, four for losses. The Vikings held Waverly-Shell Rock to 171 total yards, including 90 on the ground. They also intercepted two passes.

Marion - The Indians obliterated Mount Pleasant, 70-7, last Friday on the road. The Indians rushed for 350 yards and seven touchdowns. Trev Biery ran seven times for 132 yards and two TDs. Colton Mowry ran for 80 yards and two TDs, and Tyler Gunderson 51 yards for two TDs. Trevor Hardman completed 2-of-4 passes for 59 yards and a TD.  Beiry had five tackles and a fumble recovery. The Indians forced five turnovers.

Prairie (1-0) vs. Kennedy (0-1)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600, FM-107.5)

TV: MC-22 (Tape-delayed Sat., 9 p.m.; Sun., 6 p.m.)

Storyline - Prairie can match its victory total of a year ago with a win against Kennedy. The Cougars, meanwhile, will try to shake off a sub-par performance a week ago against Washington. Kennedy has had slow starts each of the last two seasons. The Cougars face Iowa City West next week. They need a win against the Hawks.

Prairie - The Hawks blitzed Jefferson, 28-7, last Friday. "The Combo," quarterback Jace Hanna and receiver Jarred Edmonds, combined on five pass completions for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Hanna completed four other passes for 22 yards. The Hawks had 413 yards of total offense, including 221 on the ground behind soph tackle Bryce Meeker. Demetrius Harper ran for 96 yards, including a 74-yard TD jaunt. Hanna ran for 54 yards. The Hawks' defense forced three turnovers and allowed 157 yards.

Kennedy - The Cougars opened the season with a 17-6 loss to Washington last Friday. Alex Hillyer rushed for 134 yards, but no other Cougar had more than 13 yards. Kennedy completed only 5 of 26 passes. Starter  Riley Fergus was 0-for-9, but did complete a backward pass. Joel Smetzer was 5-of-16 for 69 yards. Jacob Frazier-Flores and Donovan Kosman caught two passes apiece. Dalvin Dixon had 10 tackles and Kosman intercepted a pass. Eric Bertroche kicked two field goals, with a long of 38.

Washington (1-0) at No. 6 Iowa City West (1-0)

Site: Iowa City West

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - The lesson of Week 1 was never underestimate a Tony Lombardi coached team. Again. Last year the Warriors pulled off three monumental upsets after being counted out of the playoff picture. One was a 66-37 thumping of a talented Iowa City West club that was ranked in the top 10. Guess what? The Trojans are ranked again. You can bet they haven't forgotten about last year's game.

Washington - The Warriors stunned Kennedy, 17-6, last Friday. Mitch Bredeson rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns behind an inexperienced line that includes two sophomores, but is anchored by senior Zac Gillis. Mitch Blades completed 7-of-14 passes for 135 yards and ran for 40 yards in his first varsity start at quarterback. Jason Oney caught four passes.Riyad Ajram kicked a 30-yard field goal. The defense forced three turnovers.

Iowa City West - The Trojans trampled Linn-Mar, 49-14, last Friday night at Linn-Mar. Nate Boland completed 14-of-22 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Dondre Alexander caught four passes for 106 yards. Jeremy Morgan caught four passes for 51 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Batie and Micah Kelsay also caught TD passes. Ezra Reiners rushed 11 times for 118 yards and a touchdown. The Trojans ran for 178 yards and four TDs. Morgan kicked seven PATs.

Valley (0-1, 0-2) Cedar Valley Christian (0-0, 0-1)

Site: LaSalle middle school

Time: 7 p.m.

Storyline - Cedar Valley Christian is looking for its first win in its second season of having a football program. The Huskies were 0-4 a year ago when they played as an independent. This game is the first of eight contests this season in 8-Player District 4. It is a tremendous test for the Huskies.

Valley - The Tigers have been outscored 101-52 in their two losses. They dropped a 33-24 decision to Rockford two weeks ago and were drubbed by Preston, 68-28, last week. Cody Torkelson has completed 20 of 42 passes for 494 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Burgin is the leading rusher with 81 yards. Torkelson has 55 yards rushing and three TDs. Alex Corkery has eight receptions for 271 yards and three TDs. Grant Wagner has caught seven passes. Wagner also has a team-high 35 tackles.

Cedar Valley - The Huskies opened the  season with a 76-0 loss at HLV last Friday. They attempted only two passes and did not complete any. Daniel Ostroot rushed eight times for 68 yards. Evan Koch ran 13 times for 16 yards. Eric Gustafson had 11 tackles, including three for lost yardage. Ostroot also returned five kickoffs for 66 yards.
