Xavier destroys Jefferson, 49-0

It took Xavier one play to assert its authority over Jefferson and one half to put the J-Hawks away Thursday night at Kingston Stadium.

Senior Cal Stovie ran 80 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage, Xavier rolled up a 42-0 lead by halftime and the No. 7 Saints destroyed the J-Hawks, 49-0.

Senior Reggie Schulte completed only six passes, but four went for touchdowns. Jim Moore caught two of them.

Stovie also scored on a 51-yard punt return.

Xavier (2-0) also held Jefferson (0-2) to 104 total yards, just 28 via the run. The Saints defense also scored a touchdown when Eric Ryberg returned a fumble 15 yards for a score early in the third quarter.

It was an overwhelming performance.

"Even our second- and third-team guys were flying to the ball," Xavier Coach Duane Schulte said. "They were a little hungry and they came in and did their job and that was fun to see."

Xavier was mainly on defense in the second half, which zipped by because of the 35-point mercy rule that kept the clock running.

Schulte said Jefferson came it in a different defensive scheme than what the J-Hawks showed in their season opener last week at Prairie.

"The first quarter, we didn't block very well. They came after us and did a good job," Coach Schulte said. "You have to give Jefferson credit. They altered their gameplan from the week before and gave us some problems.

"I think sometimes they had 11 guys on the line, it seemed like."

But that alignment left the J-Hawks vulnerable to the pass, and Schulte's son Reggie made them pay.

"We made some adjustments and got a little better as the game went on," Coach Schulte said. "I don't know if we got lucky or what, but we hit some passes and made some plays."

Reggie Schulte's first three passes all were completed for touchdowns. He was sacked four times for minus-23 yards, but he also completed 6-of-7 passes for 173 yards. In two games he has thrown seven touchdown passes.

"They had a lot of sacks to start it out. They came out ready to go, that was for sure," Reggie Schulte said of the Jefferson defense.

Schulte tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Corbin Woods for a touchdown with 3:37 left in the first quarter that gave Xavier a 14-0 lead.

On the first play of the second quarter, Schulte dumped a pass to Jim Moore five yards beyond the line of scrimmage. He spun and ran untouched 82 yards for a touchdown that boosted the Saints' lead to 21-0.

"I think guys just made some plays and took what the defense gave us," Reggie Schulte said. "Once we got past that first wave there wasn't anybody there. They did a great job of running to daylight and getting into the end zone."

Jefferson fumbled on its next possession and Schulte and Moore hooked up again on a 22-yard scoring pass that made it 28-0 with 10:05 left in the half.

And the rout was on.

Jefferson mounted its deepest penetration of the game on its next possession, reaching the Xavier 34 before turning the ball over on downs.

Six plays later, Schulte tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to 6-foot-8 Matt Nelson for a 35-0 lead.

The Saints tacked on another score when Stovie hauled  in a Jefferson punt and 51 yards down the far sideline to paydirt and a 42-0 lead with 52.9 seconds left in the half.

"The first thing we do is just make sure we catch the ball," said Stovie, who also had a 53-yard punt return that set up the Saints' second touchdown. "Then we just make sure we get that wall there."

Stovie played sparingly on offense a year ago, when Carter Valentine was a senior and ran for more than 1,000 yards. He is quickly making up for lost time, however. He carried the ball seven times for 125 yards against Jefferson pushing his two-game total to 264 yards.

"Carter was a great leader to me. He helped me learn what I was supposed to do," Stovie said.

One of the big things Stovie learned was that if he wanted the position he had to earn it.

"No position is given," he said. "That's what we have to do every day, earn the position we want."

Xavier appears to in good position for a special season.

"It's only two games," Coach Schulte said. "There's a lot of season left, a lot of stuff that's going to happen."

Xavier plays at Prairie next Friday night.

Jefferson will try to end its 24-game losing streak at Dubuque Hempstead next Friday.
