Linn-Mar falls in 3 OTs to Dubuque Senior

DUBUQUE - The Late Show with the Linn-Mar Lions had an unhappy ending Thursday night.

Ben Martin kicked a 23-yard field goal to give Dubuque Senior a 39-36 victory over the Lions in triple overtime in a Mississippi Valley Conference game that was played at the University of Dubuque football field.

The game did not end until after 11 p.m.

Linn-Mar (0-2) had a 22-16 lead in the fourth quarter, but Dubuque Senior (2-0) tied the game 22-22 on a 7-yard run by quarterback Austin Clemens with 53.8 seconds left in regulation. The Rams had a chance to win the game at that point, but Martin missed the PAT.

The Lions grabbed a 29-22 lead in the first overtime on a 10-yard run by quarterback Rhys Davis and the PAT by Austin Wolter. The Rams countered on a 7-yard pass from Clemens to Cole Wilbricht and the PAT by Martin to make it 29-29.

Dubuque Senior had the first possession in double-overtime and grabbed a 36-29 lead on a 10-yard pass from Clemens to Andy Reed and the PAT by Martin. Linn-Mar answered on a 1-yard run by Davis and the PAT by Wolter to make it 36-36.

The Lions had the first possession in triple-overtime, but they were called for a holding penalty and Davis threw an interception. The Rams took over and marched into field-goal position for Martin's winning kick.

''The kids played hard, but they just couldn't get it done at the end," said Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth. "It was a great high school football game and the kids played hard."

Davis carried the ball 21 times for 153 yards for Linn-Mar. He ran for three touchdowns, including a 63-yard scamper, and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Zach Martins in the second quarter.

Ross Lembeck ran 15 times for 53 yards for the Lions. Nick Trabucco carried six times for 30 yards. Martins caught five passes for 78 yards.

Clemens had three touchdown passes for Dubuque Senior. Alex Duster carried the ball 32 times for 142 yards for the Rams.
