Prep football prevues - Sept. 6-7

The Metro football weekend starts Thursday night at Kingston Stadium when Kennedy hosts No. 5 Iowa City West.

The Cougars (0-2) are in need of a win after losses to Washington (17-6) and Prairie (41-33), but they face a high-powered West (2-0) that has clubbed Linn-Mar and Washington by a combined score of 111-51.

There are six games on tap Friday, with the spotlight falling on a pair of undefeated teams when No. 7 Xavier (2-0) travels to Prairie (2-0).

No. 1 Cedar Falls faces Washington at Kingston Stadium, Anamosa is at Marion, Jefferson is at Dubuque Hempstead, Linn-Mar at Waterloo West and Cedar Valley Christian at Springville.

Division play starts in the Mississippi Valley Conference and Class 3A. These games count in the standings and the race for a playoff berth.

Here is an overview of games Thursday and Friday:

Thursday

No. 5 Iowa City West (2-0) vs. Kennedy (0-2)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600, FM-107.5, FM-106.3); WMT (AM-600)

TV: KCRG 9.2 (Mediacom 109, Imon 709)

Storyline - Kennedy faces West at home for the second time in as many seasons. The Cougars battled the Trojans before falling 35-28 last year. Kennedy is in dire need of a win. This would be a huge upset.

Iowa City West - The Trojans trampled Washington, 62-37, last Friday night at West. Nate Boland completed 22-of-27 passes for 344 yards and three touchdowns. Dondre Alexander caught eight passes for 154 yards and a TD. Micah Kelsay had three rushing TDs. West has outscored its first two foes, 111-51. Season leaders - Passing: Boland 36-49-1-571 5 TDs; Receiving: Alexander 12-260 1 TD, Jeremy Morgan 9-111 2 TDs; Rushing: Ezra Reiners 19-130 1 TD, Kelsay 13-67 4 TDs; Tackles: Kelsay 17, Colin Baker 14; PATs: Morgan 11-11.

Kennedy - The Cougars riddled by Prairie last Friday night at Kingston Stadium. Alex Hillyer rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns, and Riley Fergus threw three TD passes to Jacob Frazier-Flores. Fergus completed 5 of 8 passes after connecting only once in 10 attempts the week before. Season leaders - Rushing: Hillyer 50-349 2 TDs; Passing: Fergus 6-18-0-65 3 TDs, Joel Smetzer 5-16-2-65 0 TDs; Receiving: Frazier-Flores 5-88 3 TDs; Tackles: Dalvin Dixon 18 tackles (3 for loss), David Hynek 16. PATs: Eric Bertroche 3-4; FGs: Bertroche 2-2 (long 38).

Friday

No. 7 Xavier (2-0) at Prairie (2-0)

Site: John Wall Field

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Radio: KGYM (AM-1600, FM-107.5); KMRY (AM-1450, FM-93.1)

Storyline - Prairie's DeMetrius Harper broke his collarbone on the opening kickoff of last year's game, when Xavier beat the Hawks 14-0. That was one - unintentional - way to contain the speedy receiver/returner. Harper, who scored three touchdowns against Kennedy last week, is back for this game. Both teams have high-powered offenses, but Xavier's defense has allowed only seven points, albeit against Hempstead and Jefferson. This one should be a shootout.

Xavier - The Saints outscored Hempstead and Jeff by a combined 97-7 in their first two games. Cal Stovie carried the ball seven times for 125 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown run on the game's first play from scrimmage in last week's 49-0 rout of Jeff. Reggie Schulte completed 6 of 7 passes for 171 yards and four TDs. Season leaders - Rushing: Stovie 24-264 2 TDs; Passing: Schulte 20-26-1-365 7 TDs; Receiving: Jim Moore 5-161 3 TDs, Bryce Grimm 6-70 1 TD, Corbin Woods 4-55 2 TDs; Tackles: Craig Murtha 9 (2 for loss), Sean Ickes 6 (6 for loss); PATs: Ryan Persick 13-14.

Prairie - The Hawks beat Kennedy 41-33 last Friday. Harper caught 13 passes for 134 yards and 2 TDS and ran back a kickoff 90 yards for a TD. Jace Hanna completed 21 of 27 passes for 333 yards and four TDs and also ran for 85 yards and a TD. Jarred Edmonds also had more than 100 yards receiving. Season leaders - Rushing: Hanna 20-132 1 TD, Harper 9-77 1 TD; Passing: Hanna 30-47-2-548 7 TDs; Receiving: Harper 16-170 2 TDs, Edmonds 9-283 4 TDs; Tackles: Cam Rathje 28, Casey Becker 20; PATs: Sam Drysdale 9-9.

No. 1 Cedar Falls (2-0) vs. Washington (1-1)

Site: Kingston Stadium

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

TV: MC-22 (Tape-delayed Sat., 9 p.m.; Sun., 6 p.m.)

Storyline - This is a rematch of a quarterfinal playoff game of a year ago that Cedar Falls won, 35-32, at Kingston Stadium. Thank goodness Barkley Hill graduated! The Tigers took over the No. 1 spot in the polls this week when West Des Moines Valley was dumped by Dowling last Friday. This will be a headbanger.

Cedar Falls - The Tigers beat Waterloo East 30-20 last week and also own a 28-14 win over Iowa City High.  Brayden Longnecker completed 9 of 12 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown against East, and Eli Berregaard ran 10 times for 102 yards and a TD. Season leaders - Rushing: Jake Buck 43-201 4 TDs, Nick Clark 19-176 2 TDs, Berregaard 12-107 1 TD; Passing: Longnecker 14-21-1-169 1 TD; Receiving: Ike Boettger 6-68, Brandon Corkery 3-56 1 TD; Tackles: Jared Farley 14, Boettger 9; PATs: Jacob Newton 7-8; FGs: Newton 1-1 (28 yards).

Washington - The Warriors were throttled by Iowa City West, 62-37, last Friday after stunning Kennedy, 17-6, the week before. Mitch Blades ran for 169 yards and 2 TDs, but completed only 5 of 16 passes for 88 yards against Iowa City West. Mitch Bredeson rushed for 142 yards and a TD. The Warriors battled back from a 48-17 halftime deficit. Season leaders - Rushing: Bredeson 50-264 3 TDs, Blades 20-217 2 TDs; Passing: Blades 12-30-2-226 0 TDs; Receiving: Jason Oney 8-115; Tackles: Jake Bjornsen 25, Connor Vincent 16; PATs: Riyad Ajram 6-7; FGs: Ajram 2-2 (long 42).

Anamosa (0-2) at Marion (1-1)

Site: Thomas Park

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - Marion trounced Mount Pleasant, then got flattened by No. 1 Decorah. Anamosa is probably more toward the Mount Pleasant end of the spectrum. The Indians drubbed Anamosa 58-35 a year ago. Expect more of the same in this one.

Anamosa - The Raiders were beaten by Camanche 30-12 last Friday and lost their opener against Monticello 25-0. Both of those teams are in Class 2A. Connyr Lewis passed for 159 yards and a touchdown against Camanche, but also tossed four interceptions. The Raiders were held to 24 yards of rushing offense and have 57 for the season. Season leaders - Passing: Lewis 24-52-6-250 1 TD; Rushing: Anton Wegan 10-35; Receiving: Josh Schulte 11-119, Kevin Schepanski 9-111 1 TD; Tackles: Demetrik Brown 26 (6 for loss); PATs: None.

Marion - The Indians were steamrolled by No. 1 Decorah 35-0 last Friday after they obliterated Mount Pleasant 70-7 the week before. The Indians were held to 81 total yards against Decorah, but rushed for 350 yards and seven touchdowns against Mount Pleasant. Season leaders - Rushing: Trev Beiry 11-136 2 TDs, Colton Mowry 21-93 2 TDs, Tyler Gunderson 10-86 2 TDs; Passing: Trevor Hardman 8-16-0-93 1 TD; Receiving: Andrew Davis 2-53 1 TD. Tackles: Ethen Herren 12, Gunderson 10, Ben Buckley 10, Beiry 10; PATs: Dalton Ott 4-5, Ben Kroemer 2-3.

Jefferson (0-2) at Dubuque Hempstead (0-2)

Site: University of Dubuque

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - The J-Hawks carry the longest current losing streak among Class 4A schools in the state at 24. Hempstead beat Jefferson 35-24 in Week 9 last season at Dubuque. Looking at the schedule, this could be the J-Hawks' best opportunity for a win this season. Cross your fingers, eyes and toes.

Jefferson - The J-Hawks were overwhelmed by Xavier 49-0 last Thursday. They used a blitzing defense that sacked Saints quarterback Reggie Schulte four times, but left the back door open for four scoring passes. The J-Hawks also were held to 104 yards of total offense. The offense was stifled by the loss of Creighton Robinson, who broke his foot in the season-opening 28-7 loss at Prairie. Season leaders - Rushing: Nick O'Connell 21-56; Passing: Layne Sullivan 11-30-0-126; Receiving: Hunter Kloubec 5-30, Peter Watson 3-41; PATs: Reece Suckow 1-1.

Hempstead - The Mustangs wre beaten by Wahlert 21-20 last Friday after getting shellacked by Xavier the week before. The only game for which stats are available came from the Xavier contest when the Mustangs were held to 140 total yards, but only nine on the ground. The Saints rolled up 471 yards of total offense.

Linn-Mar (0-2) at Waterloo West (0-2)

Site: Memorial Stadium, Waterloo

Time: 7:15 p.m. (approximately)

Sophomore game: 5 p.m.

Storyline - Linn-Mar won 40-0

Linn-Mar - The Lions lost a triple-overtime thriller, 39-36, last Thursday at Dubuque Senior after getting pasted by Iowa City West in their opener. Quarterback Rhys Davis rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns, and also threw a TD pass.  Season leaders - Rushing: Davis 34-239 3 TDs, Ross Lembeck 24-120 1 TD; Passing: Davis 12-24-2-141 1 TD; Receiving: Zach Martins 4-73 1 TD; Tackles: Nick Trabucco 23 (2 for loss), Dakota Digmann 16 (3 for loss), Lucas Meyer 16 (2 for loss); PATs: Austin Wolter 6-6; FGs: Wolter 0-1.

Season leaders - Rushing: Martin 24-229 2 TDs, Alex Young 22-97; Passing: Tovar 8-21-1-148 2 TDs, Young 9-17-1-74; Receiving: Martin 4-93 2 TDs, Jacob Showalter 4-59; Tackles: Blake Thomas 26 (6 for loss); PATs: Skyler Capelle 2-5, Jon Schmadeke 1-1; FGs: Schmadeke 0-1.

Site: Springville High School

Time: 7 p.m.

TV: KCRG 9.2 (Mediacom 109, Imon 709)

Storyline - Cedar Valley Christian is looking for its first win in its second season of having a football program. The Huskies were 0-4 a year ago when they played as an independent. This is the second of eight contests this season in 8-Player District 4. It is a tremendous test for the Huskies.

Cedar Valley - The Huskies have been outscored 148-0 in losses to HLV (76-0) and Valley (72-0) to open the season. They didn't get a first down last week against Valley, when they did not record a first down. They had minus-105 yards rushing and five yards passing. Cedar Valley has been held to minus-39 total yards for the season. Season leaders - Not available.

Springville - The Orioles have outscored Elkader Central and Meskwaki by a combined score of 93-34. They drubbed Meskwaki 58-8 last week.
