Another big loss for Huskies

If last week was the Cedar Valley Christian football team's best chance to get their first win ever, Friday was the next best chance.

The Huskies suffered a big loss at previous winless Central City last week but got another shot at a first win at home against the one-win Warriors of Central Elkader.

Despite playing at LaSalle Middle School, there was no home-field advantage for the Huskies.

The Warriors took control early and never looked back as they rushed their way past the Huskies, 82-14, in an 8-player District 4 game.

The Huskies (0-8, 0-6) helped Central (2-7, 2-6) right off the bat with a fumble in their own end zone that the Warriors’ Austin Kelly fell on for the first score. Central had yet to run an offensive play.

The rest of the quarter was all Warriors as they piled up 46 points on six touchdowns including another defensive score on an interception return.

The Huskies also muffed a kickoff return which the Warriors turned into points on the next play.

In all, the first half was one to forget as Cedar Valley Christian managed only one first down, was outgained 197 to 21, and trailed 62-0 at the break.

Cedar Valley Christian continued to show its resilience. The Huskies battled through the whole game as they have all year.

It took until the fourth quarter with just under 4 minutes remaining for the Huskies to find paydirt. Huskie quarterback Spencer Zielke tumbled in from three yards out to end the shutout.

Zielke later connected with Issac Egli on a long pass to get the Huskies into double digits for the fifth straight week.

Cedar Valley Christian wraps up its first full season next Friday at LaSalle against first-place Preston.
