Cougars grab 3rd at MVC swim meet

PDF

Kennedy, Linn-Mar, Washington and Jefferson could have put an all-star team together Saturday and still not have won the Mississippi Valley Conference swim meet.

That's how strong the MVC is with some of the top teams and top individuals in the state.

The Cedar Falls Tigers, ranked No. 2 in the state, captured seven events Saturday and claimed the conference title with 436 points in the 12-team field.

Iowa City West, which is ranked No. 6, finished second with 388 markers.

The Kennedy Cougars, who are ranked No. 8, had to settle for third place behind Cedar Falls and Iowa City West with 290 points.

Kennedy Coach John Ross said he was not discouraged or frustrated by the third-place showing, considering the stiff competition.

"Oh, no no no," he said emphatically. "I love the competition. That's how you get better. You have to swim against the best to be the best.

"I'm real happy," he said. "The girls' goal was to try and place in the top three, and they were able to do that."

Dubuque Senior won three events and Iowa City West claimed two victories, which did not leave any titles for anyone else.

Jessica Schmeiser had a productive day for Kennedy by finishing second in the 200 freestyle relay, third in the 100 freestyle, fourth in the 400 freestyle relay and fifth in the 200 freestyle.

Schmeiser, Sam Jacobsen, Megan Berst and Hannah Botkin swam a swift 1:42.16 in the 200 freestyle relay, but Dubuque Senior set a conference meet record with a winning time of 1:40.54.

Jacobsen collected a pair of third-place medals for Kennedy in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Botkin finished third in the 50 freestyle. The Linn-Mar Lions, who are ranked 11th in the state, tied for fourth in the team standings with Dubuque Senior. The Lions placed third in the 200 medley relay with Lizzie Adams, Lauren Dalecky, Alexa Klimes and Samantha Fitzgerald.

The Washington Warriors, who are ranked 19th in the state, tied for sixth in the team standings with Dubuque Wahlert. Jackie Hughes finished third in the 200 individual medley, fourth in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 400 freestyle relay with McKenzie Asplund, Maddie Dietz and Jackie Allen.

The Jefferson J-Hawks finished 11th.
