'Singing Saint' helps Xavier get ready

PDF

Harry Daubitz has dress shoes, dancing shoes and football shoes at Xavier High School and enjoys wearing them all.

He performs in honor choir, sings at his church, performs in show choir and recently made the all-state choir. He's in so many choirs that he kind of lost count.

"Five or six," he said.

Daubitz, a tenor, also sings a happy tune for the third-ranked Xavier football team that will host Waterloo East in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs Monday night.

He's not a star on the football squad, but he's an important member of the Scout Team that helps the varsity prepare for its next opponent.

You don't normally associate football and singing - or singing and football - but Daubitz loves putting on the pads and playing the game.

"I've played it for as long as I can remember," he said. "It's one of the greatest sports in the world.

"I just love coming to practice every day. I couldn't imagine not coming to practice."

Daubitz is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound offensive lineman on the Scout Team. He routinely faces bigger and stronger teammates in practice, but keeps plugging away and doing his job.

"He's actually a pretty quiet kind of kid," Coach Duane Schulte said. "He's a hard-nosed, tough kid that battles and faces some tough kids on the other side of the ball every day and never complains and jumps back in."

Xavier has a strong defensive line that likes to toss blockers aside and smash the ballcarrier. Daubitz faces them in practice every day.

"He kind of takes a beating some days and tries to help dish out a beating, but does a great job on our Scout Team," Schulte said.

Daubitz is a busy guy with all his choirs, football and school, but appears to be thriving with the heavy load.

"I find that the more I can do, it's easier to manage and really block out my schedule," he said. "I'm able to go from football practice to show choir to choir. Then I do my homework at night.

"Sleep is a little bit of an issue, but I'm always able to get back to school on time."

Xavier encourages its students to participate in extracurricular activities, but only if they take them seriously.

"If you're going to do both, then do both," said Schulte, repeating advice issued by Xavier principal Tom Keating. "Don't be the guy that's in one activity and goes half-hearted in the other activity. If you're going to be in both, do both."

Schulte has had "Singing Saints" on his team before.

"It's not that unusual, to be honest with you," he said. "We've had guys over the years do both."

Daubitz is the latest in a series of singing Saints.

"He's not a starter, but he's a tough kid," Schulte said. "You don't usually use the word 'tough' to describe a singer, but that kind of helps describe him."

On top of everything else, Daubitz had perfect attendance in the weight room over the summer. He's a junior, with a chance to contribute in games next season on the varsity.

By the time the Saints take the field against Waterloo East Monday night, Daubitz will have done his job and can relax. Unless they need someone to sing the national anthem, that is.

"If I'm asked, I might," he said. "I don't know how that would work."
