Sanchez has rough home debut with Warriors

Adam Sanchez lost by 27 points and was slapped with a technical foul in his first home game as the new boys basketball coach at Cedar Rapids Washington Saturday night.

He hopes things get better from here.

The Warriors had trouble scoring and lost to North Scott, 57-30, in a non-conference affair that extended Washington's losing streak to 24 straight games.

The Warriors lost the final game of the 2010-11 campaign, dropped all 21 games last season and are 0-2 this year.

Washington opened the season Friday night with a 61-40 loss at Bettendorf, then came home and got drilled by the Lancers (3-0).

"We've made some progress, but tonight it didn't show," Sanchez said. "When you change things around, guys are going to have growing pains. And tonight was one of those growing pains."

Washington scored six points in the first quarter, three points in the second quarter and four points in the third quarter. That led to a 45-13 deficit entering the final stanza, when both coaches emptied their benches.

The Warriors played hard and did a decent job on defense, but they couldn't put the ball in the basket until scoring 17 points in the fourth quarter in mop-up time.

"The effort was really good. Guys are buying into how we defend and are getting better at it," Sanchez said. "The hard part for us right now is making shots. It's hard to play hard for 32 minutes without making shots."

Sanchez disagreed with the officials on several calls and twice was told to sit down. The third time it happened, he was called for a technical with 26 seconds left in the first half.

"It was unfortunate it happened. I didn't want it to happen," he said. "I apologized to the team for it.

"That's not something I want to do. But sometimes I'm going to fight from the sideline. The officials were doing a good job. Hopefully it won't happen again."

Peter Holmes led Washington with eight points.

Eric Huber scored 17 points for North Scott. Cortez Seales had 10 points.
