Marion sweeps CPU in baseball

CENTER POINT - The Marion High School baseball team raised its record to 18-10 Monday night by sweeping a Wamac Conference doubleheader from Center Point-Urbana, 10-7 and 12-0.

Owen Carstensen socked a three-run triple and pitched five strong innings in relief for Marion in the first game. He struck out seven batters. All nine players in the Marion lineup collected a hit and eight different Indians scored a run.

David Kuhn tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the nightcap. Maverick Miller had three hits. John Carstensen and Owen Carstensen had two hits.

Center Point-Urbana fell to 4-23.

Prairie wins Marion baseball tourney

Cedar Rapids Prairie won both of its games at the Marion baseball tournament Saturday to claim first place in the three-team event.

The Hawks topped Marion, 6-2, and blanked Burlington, 3-0.

Marion gained a split in the tournament by trimming Burlington, 3-1.

Blake Viall, Drew Yanecek and JP Havel-Pisarik shared the pitching for Prairie in the 6-2 verdict against Marion. Jalen Rima and Tyler Nunemaker had two hits for the Hawks.

Maverick Miller had two hits for Marion against Prairie. John Carstensen pitched a complete game for the Indians.

Tyler Ellertson tossed a three-hitter for Marion in the 3-1 victory over Burlington. Bobby Vanderlind had three hits and two RBIs.

Prairie raised its record to 20-4. Marion is 16-10.

Hot Indians sweep Maquoketa in Wamac

MAQUOKETA - The Marion High School baseball team stayed hot Thursday night by sweeping a Wamac Conference doubleheader at Maquoketa, 5-0 and 4-1.

The Indians have won 8-of-9 games, raising their record to 14-9.

Marion got more good pitching Thursday night. Owen Carstensen tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game and Mitch Wiese allowed only three hits in the nightcap.

Tyler Ellertson had three hits for Marion in the first game. John Carstensen had two hits. Ellertson and Owen Carstensen had two RBIs.

John Carstensen, Bobby Vanderlind and Gage Kray had RBIs for Marion in the second game.

Maquoketa fell to 3-19.

Marion splits with Mustangs in baseball

MOUNT VERNON - The Marion High School baseball team traded victories with the Mount Vernon Mustangs in a Wamac Conference doubleheader in Mount Vernon Tuesday.

Marion won the first game, 3-1, in eight innings. Mount Vernon took the nightcap, 12-2, in five innings.

David Kuhn had a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and boost Marion to the 3-1 victory in the opener. Kuhn drove in all three runs for the Indians. Owen Carstensen had two hits.

Brady Donohue of Marion and Luke Eldred of Mount Vernon both pitched complete games in the opener. Both pitchers scattered six hits in the duel.

Mount Vernon scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the nightcap by the 10-run rule. Mitch Wiese hit a solo home run for Marion.

The split left Marion at 13-9 overall and Mount Vernon at 11-9.

Marion Indians win pair of shutouts

The Marion Indians got strong pitching Thursday night and swept a Wamac Conference doubleheader from Anamosa, 2-0 and 6-0, at Marion.

The sweep lifted the Indians to 12-8. Anamosa fell to 5-13.

Mitch Wiese and Owen Carstensen combined for the shutout in the first game. Wiese got the victory and Carstensen collected a save.

Tyler Ellertson had two hits for Marion. Baylor Fish and David Kuhn had RBIs.

Gage Kray tossed 5 2/3 innings with five strikeouts for the victory in the nightcap. Bobby Vanderland, Kuhn, Carstensen, Ellertson and Fish had RBIs. Vanderlind and Kuhn had two hits. Carstensen had a triple.
