Kennedy girls climb to No. 1 in poll

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls basketball team has followed its 13-game winning streak all the way to the top of the Class 5A rankings this week.

The Cougars climbed from No. 2 to No. 1 in the latest poll released Thursday by the IGHSAU. The Johnston Dragons, who were ranked No. 1 last week, fell all the way to No. 5 with an 8-3 record.

Kennedy (13-1) has won 13 straight games since losing its season opener at Waukee. Indianola is second in the Class 5A rankings, followed by Ankeny Centennial, Waukee and Johnston.

Kennedy hosts Jefferson at 6 p.m. Friday in the first game of a girl/boy doubleheader with the J-Hawks.

The Linn-Mar Lions (8-3) dropped one spot to No. 12 in Class 5A this week.

Marion - Girls Basketball

Rice sparks No. 6 Marion girls

Chloe Rice scored 21 points to lead the sixth-ranked Marion girls basketball team in a 59-41 win over South Tama in a Wamac Conference game Tuesday at Marion.

Mia Laube added 10 points for the Indians (8-4), who led 10-0 early and 23-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Dani Stubbs scored 12 points for South Tama (6-7).

SOUTH TAMA (41): Hala 3 0-0 7, Berger 0 0-0 0, Fritz 2 0-0 4, Stubbs 5 2-8 12, Llewellyn 1 1-1 3, Climer 1 0-0 2, Bacon 4 0-0 9, Slaven 0 0-0 0, Roberts 0 0-0 0, Keahna 2 0-0 4. Totals 18 3-9 41.

Marion girls put clamps on Vinton

The sixth-ranked Marion girls basketball team held Vinton-Shellsburg to just six field goals in a 46-25 win Tuesday in a Wamac Conference game at Marion.

The Indians jumped to a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes before leading 17-11 at halftime.

Chloe Rice scored 11 points for Marion (7-3).

Vinton-Shellsburg fell to 3-9.

No. 5 Marion girls fall to No. 4 Bobcats

EPWORTH – The fourth-ranked Western Dubuque girls basketball team rallied in the second half and beat No. 5 Marion, 52-46, Tuesday in a Wamac Conference game at Western Dubuque.

The teams fought to a 24-24 tie at halftime, but the Bobcats pulled away in the second half.

Megan Maahs scored 22 points for Western Dubuque (9-0), shooting 12-of-13 from the free-throw line.

Chloe Rice led the Indians (6-3) with 17 points. Mia Laube added 13 points.

MARION (46): Knapp 1 0-0 2, Rice 6 4-4 17, Smith 2 0-0 5, Wright 0 0-0 0, Laube 4 5-6 13, Willette 0 0-0 0, Herold 2 0-0 6, Sade 1 1-1 3, Jordan 0 0-0 0. Totals 16 10-11 46.

Marion - Girls Basketball

Marion girls triple their pleasure

The fifth-ranked Marion girls basketball team nailed twelve 3-point goals and sailed past the Washington Demons, 65-44, Tuesday in Marion.

Chloe Rice and Mia Laube led the Indians from beyond the arch, each hitting three. Rice finished with 16 points, Laube had 10 points and Elle Herold 11.

Marion improved to 6-2, while Washington fell to 2-5.

WASHINGTON (44): Brinning 2 2-3 6, Redlinger 0 0-0 0, Stout 0 0-0 0, Nacos 3 0-0 7, Kimball 2 2-4 8, Salow 1 0-0 2, Dicks 0 0-0 0, DeLong 3 3-4 10, Pacha 5 1-1 11. Totals 16 8-12 44.
