No. 5 Marion falls to No. 3 CPU

CENTER POINT – Class 3A third-ranked Center Point-Urbana handed the Class 4A fifth-ranked Marion girls basketball team a 58-42 loss Friday.

Chloe Rice scored 23 points to lead the Indians (5-2) and Mia Laube added eight points.

Arika Wooldrige scored 21 points to lead the Stormin’ Pointers (8-0).

MARION (42): Knapp 1 2-5 4, Rice 7 8-8 23, Smith 1 0-0 3, Wright 0 0-0 0, Dunne 0 0-0 0, Laube 3 2-2 8, Willette 0 0-0 0, Herold 1 0-0 3, Sade 0 1-7 1, Jordan 0 0-0 0. Totals 13 13-19 42.

No. 6 Marion girls top Benton

The sixth-ranked Marion girls basketball closed with a 17-9 run in the fourth quarter to beat Benton Community, 50-39, Tuesday at Marion.

Maddie Knapp, Chloe Rice and Mia Laube each scored 14 points to lead the Indians (5-1).

The Bobcats fell to 4-3.

BENTON COMMUNITY (39): Havlik 0 0-0 0, VanWeelden 4 4-6 15, Schmidt 1 0-0 2, Wiebel 5 0-0 12, Brunssen 0 1-2 1, McWhorter 2 0-0 5, Heilman 1 2-3 4. Totals 13 7-12 39.

Linn-Mar, Marion girls in Rivalry Saturday

The Linn-Mar and Marion high school girls basketball teams are taking their backyard rivalry to the big stage.

The Lions and Indians will meet in the 13th Annual Mercy Sports Care Rivalry Saturday on Jan. 9 at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids.

Linn-Mar and Marion will play the eighth and final game in the girls basketball event at 8:20 p.m. Both teams are ranked by the IGHSAU, with Linn-Mar at No. 6 in Class 5A and Marion at No. 6 in Class 4A.

Lions, Cougars climb in rankings

The Linn-Mar Lions and Kennedy Cougars made big jumps in the IGHSAU girls basketball rankings Friday.

The Lions climbed four spots to No. 6 in Class 5A and the Cougars jumped five spots to No. 7.

The Marion Indians fell two places to No. 6 in Class 4A. The Xavier Saints dropped out of the Class 4A rankings.

No. 6 Marion girls rip Williamsburg

The sixth-ranked Marion girls basketball team hit eleven 3-point goals and crushed Williamsburg, 64-23, Friday at Marion.

Chloe Rice scored 22 points to lead the Indians. Caitlin Smith had 11 points with three 3-pointers.

Marion improved to 4-1, while Williamsburg fell to 2-4.
