Marion boys win Independence title

INDEPENDENCE - The Marion Indians placed five runners in the top 15 Saturday and captured top honors at the Independence Invitational cross country meet.

Colton Forster finished second for Marion in the individual standings with a time of 17 minutes, 44 seconds for 5 kilomoters. Jacob Manderscheid finished 7th, Jordan Garthwaite 10th, Maverick Miller 12th and Hunter Reifschneider 15th for the Indians.

Marion finished with 46 points. Waterloo Columbus placed second in the nine-team field with 73 points.

Marion - Boys Cross Country

Marion runs 3rd at Starmont Invy

STRAWBERRY POINT - The Marion High School boys cross country team finished third out of 28 teams at the Starmont Invitational in Strawberry Point Tuesday.

Colton Forster placed seventh for the Indians in 17 minutes, 21 seconds.

Center Point-Urbana won the boys race, followed by Denver and Marion.

The Marion girls placed 11th out of 24 teams in their race. Madison Bach finished fifth for the Indians in 16 minutes, 8 seconds. Cascade won the girls title.

Marion - Boys Cross Country

Rethwisch qualifies for 3A state meet

CENTER JUNCTION - The Xavier boys cross country team and Marion's Peter Rethwisch claimed spots in next week's Class 3A state meet during Thursday's state qualifier at Jones Park in Center Junction.

The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualified for the state meet, which will be held Sat., Oct. 27, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.

The Xavier boys finished second in a tight three-way race. Mount Vernon-Lisbon was first with 59 points, followed by Xavier with 68 and Fort Madison with 69. Marion was a distant fourth with 121 points.

Xavier was led by Jacob Schmitt and Luke Koechner, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Grant Hunt was 12th, Steven Culpepper 13th and Evan Gradoville 32nd.

Rethwisch finished seventh to qualify as an individual. Colton Forster was 14th, Isaac Smith 27th, Cole Kuethe 28th and Jacob Manderscheid 45th for Marion.

Isaac Steffensmeier of Fort Madison won the boys race in 16 minutes, 47 seconds. He finished 48 seconds ahead of second-place Austin Springsteen of Mount Vernon-Lisbon.

Xavier was sixth and Marion 10th in the girls race. Neither the Saints nor Indians had a top-10 finisher.

Davenport Assumption, Solon and Fort Madison claimed the top three spots in the girls race. Lauren Benzing of Solon won the race.

Marion boys 3rd at Wamac meet

DE WITT - Peter Rethwisch ran to a sixth-place finish in the boys meet to help Marion to third place at the Wamac Conference cross country meet Thursday.

The Marion girls finished ninth, despite a sixth place finish by freshman Madison Bach.

Vinton-Shellsburg won the boys meet with 87 points. Mount Vernon-Lisbon was second with 95 and Marion third with 110.

Center Point-Urbana's Josh Yeager won the boys race in 16 minutes, 44 seconds. Rethwisch's clocking was 17:09.

Solon placed four runners in the top nine of the girls race and easily won the championship with 45 points. Western Dubuque was second with 114.

Solon's Lauren Benzinger won the girls race in 14:43. Bach's time was 15:51.

Marion runs 3rd at North Linn Invy

TROY MILLS - The Marion High School boys placed third out of 20 teams at the North Linn Invitational cross country meet Saturday.

Monticello ran away with the title with 19 points by finishing 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 7th, claiming seven of the top-13 spots overall.

Peter Rethwisch led Marion in 11th place in 17:13.

The Marion girls placed 10th out of 17 teams. Madison Bach led the Indians in 14th place in 15:28.

Solon won the girls title.
