Marion - Boys Cross Country

Rethwisch, Bach lead Marion runners at Tipton

TIPTON - Peter Rethwisch and Madison Bach of Marion finished 12th in their respective races at the Tipton Invitational cross country meet Tuesday.

Rethwisch covered the 5K course for boys in 18:20. Marion placed sixth out of 21 teams in the standings. Mount Vernon/Lisbon was the champion.

Bach finished the 4K course for girls in 17:19 to help the Indians place eighth out 19 teams in the standings. Davenport Assumption was the champion.

Marion - Boys Cross Country

Lukas Mees 1st team all-Metro

Linn-Mar sophomore Josh Evans, who finished second in last weekend's Class 4A state cross country meet, is the Metro Male Athlete of the Year.

Evans beat all Iowa competitors he ran against until the state meet, where he ran the fifth fastest time in state meet history.

All seven members of the all-Metro team are unanimous selections. The Metro cross country coaches voted on the team.

Linn-Mar, Prairie and Washington has two members apiece and Marion's Lukas Mees fills out the team.

Prairie senior Jacob Aune finished fourth at the state Class 4A meet. Hawks sophomore Mitch Pritts also was on the first team.

Other members of the first team are Linn-Mar junior Chase Grabau, Washington senior Robert Hogg and Washington junior Etienne Nzoyisaba.

Coach of the Year is Will Harte and his Washington staff. The Warriors finished fourth at the state meet.

Marion - Boys Cross Country

Lukas Mees takes 7th at Class 3A race

FORT DODGE - Marion High School senior Lukas Mees finished seventh in the Class 3A state cross country meet Saturday at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

Mees ran the 5-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 53 seconds. Marion placed eighth out of 15 teams in the standings with 221 points.

Zach Buchheit won the individual race in 15:10 and led Pella to the team championship with 85 points. Decorah finished second (100 points) and Dubuque Wahlert was third (112).

Cole Kuethe finished 45th for Marion, followed closely by Greg Sam in 46th place and Peter Rethwisch in 47th. Isaac Smith placed 77th to finish the team scoring for the Indians.

Mees finished seventh overall, but was credited with sixth place in the team standings because an individual runner from Waverly-Shell Rock finished ahead of him. Waverly-Shell Rock did not compete in the team race.

Marion, Schueler headed to state X-C meet

ANAMOSA - Lukas Mees and the Marion Indians are headed to the Class 3A state cross country meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 29.

So is Ben Schueler of Xavier High School.

Mees finished third in the individual standings to help Marion place third in the team standings at the district meet at Jones County Park in Anamosa Thursday afternoon.

Schueler finished fifth in the individual standings to qualify for state as a senior.

Conner Smock won the race in 16 minutes, 39 seconds to help Mount Vernon/Lisbon win the team championship. Fort Madison placed second with 62 points and Marion was third with 66.

The top-3 teams and top-10 individuals qualified for the state meet.

Mees finished third in 17 minutes, 4 seconds for Marion. Cole Kuethe placed 10th for the Indians, Greg Sam 13th, Peter Rethwisch 15th and Isaac Smith 25th.

Xavier finished fourth in the team standings with 123 points.

Marion - Boys Cross Country

Mees and Marion boys 2nd at Wamac meet

MOUNT VERNON - Marion senior Lukas Mees finished second and led the Indians to a second-place finish Thursday in the Wamac Conference boys cross country meet.

Mees ran the 5k course in 16 minutes, 55 seconds. He was 18 seconds behind first-place finisher Conner Smock of Mount Vernon-Lisbon.

Mount Vernon-Lisbon had three finishers in the top 10 and finished with 52 points. Marion had three in the top 18 and had 82 points.

Marion senior Greg Sam was 11th, and juniors Cole Kuethe, Peter Rethwisch and Issac Smith finished 18th, 22nd and 29th, respectively.
