Cascade tops Marion in final seconds

Cascade quarterback John Larkin found Trace Hoffman with a 16-yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds left in the game Friday night to give the Cougars a 29-26 victory over Marion at Thomas Park.

Marion grabbed a 26-23 lead in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard run by Gage Kray, but Cascade rebounded and handed the Indians their 11th straight loss dating back to last season.

Tony Perkins returned to the sidelines for Marion (0-3) after serving a one-game suspension last week. He still needs one victory to tie Les Hipple for the most in school history at 105.

Kory Walsh carried the ball 21 times for 210 yards for Marion and scored twice on runs of 5 and 55 yards, but it wasn't quite enough.

Perkins will coach Marion this week

Tony Perkins has been reinstated as the Marion High School football coach this week, The Gazette reported on its website Wednesday morning.

Marion athletic director Corby Laube told The Gazette, "Yes, he was back at practice Tuesday, and he will be coaching the team on Friday."

Laube did not respond to an e-mail or a voice message from the Metro Sports Report on Tuesday seeking comment about Perkins. Laube returned a phone call to the Metro Sports Report Wednesday morning and confirmed Perkins will coach the Indians in a home game against Cascade this Friday night.

The Metro Sports Report broke the story last Wednesday night that Perkins had been suspended and that Marion assistant coach Nick Perkins, his brother, had been fired due to an allegation of verbal abuse in the football program, based on two sources.

Marion officials have declined comment on why Tony Perkins was suspended and why Nick Perkins was fired. Neither Perkins brother coached the Indians this past Friday night in a loss at Washington.

Marion has an 0-2 record this season and has lost 10 straight games, including the final eight of the 2014 season.

Marion bumped off by Washington

WASHINGTON - The Marion Indians struggled without coach Tony Perkins on Friday night and lost to the Washington Demons, 42-12, in a Class 3A non-district game in Washington.

Jack Giardino scored four touchdowns for Washington on runs of 6, 47, 82 and 4 yards. Washington quarterback Ryan Reighard scored twice on scampers of 4 and 16 yards as the Demons (1-1) collected all six of their touchdowns on the ground.

Perkins will not coach Marion in game

Tony Perkins will not coach the Marion Indians in their football game at Washington (Iowa) on Friday night, athletic director Corby Laube confirmed Thursday afternoon.

Nick Perkins, an assistant coach at Marion and the head coach's brother, also will not coach the team Friday.

Two sources told the Metro Sports Report Wednesday night that Tony Perkins had been suspended and Nick Perkins had been fired due to allegations of verbal abuse in the football program. Laube declined comment on the Perkins brothers and declined to say why they will not be at the game.

Laube said assistant coaches Travis Fuller, Pete Messerli, Josh Busenbark, Travis Stearns, Henry Martinson and Gerald Lowry will run the team Friday night at Washington. Laube declined to name an interim or acting head coach.

Turnovers doom Marion against Mustangs

The turnover bug is bugging Tony Perkins again.

The Marion Indians committed five turnovers Saturday night in a 37-14 loss to Mount Vernon in the season opener at Thomas Park.

Turnovers hurt the Indians during their 1-and-8 campaign last year and haunted them again Saturday.

"I just don't understand the bug that we have right now. We just give things away," said Perkins.

"We had I don't know how many opportunities to stop them and we jump off-sides. We're going in for a touchdown and we drop the ball. We had turnover after turnover. It's just frustrating."

Mount Vernon, which has a talented ballclub, was happy to take advantage of the home team's generosity.
