Marion rises up and smites Benton

Hold that obituary on the Marion football team's playoff life. The rebuilt Indians roared back into playoff contention Friday night with a must-win, 41-0, victory over a stuck-in-the-mud Benton Community team at Thomas Park.

Looking like a completely different team from the lethargic, mistake-prone crew of the past two weeks, the Indians got back on track with a emphatic home  blowout win. From the opening kickoff to the running clock pronouncement, this was Marion (3-3, 2-1 Class 3A District 6) at its near best. And as a result, the Indians are back in play big time for a playoff berth.

Marion's retracking began on the offensive line.

Marion bumped off by Maquoketa, 27-8

MAQUOKETA - The Marion football team's sluggish, shaky season was badly in need of a shot of adrenaline, a double expresso of momentum, something that would wake the Indians up and get this talented club back on the playoff track.

Marion wasn't finding it on this bummer of a Friday night road trip.

A Maquoketa team looking like the best club in Class 3A District 6 sent the skidding Indians to their third loss in four games with a no-doubt 27-8 rout in Maquoketa.

The Cardinals (4-1, 3-0) derailed the Marion running game early and never allowed the Indians to get on track. Maquoketa held its guests to zero rushing yards in the first half and kept Marion (2-3, 1-1) off the scoreboard until Dontavious Young broke up the shutout with a 2-yard run with 1:58 to play.

Marion humbled at home, 42-14

If the pattern for Marion's football season holds, Maquoketa might be in for a rough night when it faces the Indians next week at home.

After being crushed by Decorah 34-7 two weeks ago, Marion rebounded last week by annihilating Anamosa 58-0.

The Indians were manhandled again Friday night at Thomas Park, this time 42-14 by a tough bunch from Washington, Iowa.

They could be seeking redemption next time out.

If they play like they did against the Demons, on the other hand, Marion may be the one in trouble.

Marion steamrolls Anamosa, 58-0

ANAMOSA -- One week after being sidelined and schooled by the defending Iowa Class 3A state champions, Marion returned to its typical dominating form Friday night.

The schedule mandated that the no-luck Anamosa Raiders would be the Indians' rebound game, and the Marion offense was an unstoppable scoring machine in this gigantic District 6 mismatch. Marion's starters were gone by the midway point of the second quarter, but the Indians never stopped yard-marching at will in a 58-0 walk in the park at Downing Field.

The dropped passes, third down breakdowns and bend-and-break defense that defined Marion's hard 34-7 road loss to reigning 3A king Decorah in last week's early-season measuring stick game were nowhere to be found Friday as Marion got its groove back by exploiting its vast strengths over the undersized, outmanned Raiders.

Marion tailback Mowry has knee injury

Marion High School tailback Colton Mowry did not play against Decorah Friday night due to a sprained MCL, according to Coach Tony Perkins.

Mowry carried the ball 18 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-0 victory over Mount Pleasant in the first game of the season, but suffered the injury during that contest. He will be sidelined for an indefinite period of time.

Mowry is a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior.

The Indians lost to Decorah, 34-7.
