Indians sidelined by No. 1 Xavier

Four different Saints scored goals and No. 1 Xavier downed Marion, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in a Class 2A boys soccer substate final at Xavier.

Defending state champion Xavier (14-2-1) advances to the state tournament as the top seed. The Saints will play eighth-seeded Clear Creek Amana (12-4) in Thursday's quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

Chris Kapfer and Tim Bouchard scored goals about five minutes apart in the first half to stake Xavier to a 2-0 lead. Chad Gilmer and Michael Tessmer added goals in the second half.

The Saints played without senior Zach Smith, who is out for the season because of a knee injury. Smith led the Saints in scoring and assists during the regular season with 12 and 10, respectively. He was named the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division boys soccer athlete of the year earlier Saturday.

Marion closed out one of the most successful boys soccer seasons in school history at 13-3.

Marion boys advance to substate final

Colton Storla scored two goals and Curran Lipsett added another to lead Marion to a 3-0 defeat of Mount Vernon in a Class 2A substate semifinal boys soccer game Wednesday at Marion.

Marion (13-2) advances to the substate final against top-ranked and defending state champion Xavier on Saturday at noon at Xavier. The Indians and Saints did not play during the regular season.

Lipsett, Stratton West and Steen Irish had assists for Marion. The Indians notched their second win over Mount Vernon. They beat the Mustangs 4-3 on April 21.

Marion boys rout West Liberty in regular season finale

Marion closed out the regular season nportion of the boys soccer season Friday with a 3-0 rout of West Liberty at Marion.

Curran Lipsett scored two goals and had an assist to lead Marion (12-2). Steen Irish scored the other goal. Markus Newton and Statton West had assists.

Marion, ranked 13th in Class 2A, is idle until Wednesday (May 25) when it hosts either Mount Vernon or Maquoketa in a Class 2A substate semifinal.

Storla's goal lifts Marion boys past Benton

Colton Storla's goal off an assist from Lukas Mees was the only goal of the game and Marion downed Benton Community, 1-0, Thursday in a Wamac Conference boys soccer game.

Marion (11-2, 8-2) closes out its regular season Friday at home against West Liberty.

Benton is 8-8, 4-7.

Marion boys dumped by Beckman in a shootout

DYERSVILLE -- Beckman upended Marion, 1-0, in a penalty kick shootout Friday in a Wamac Conference boys soccer game.

Beckman (11-1-1, 8-0 Wamac) is ranked No. 6 in Class 1A.

Marion (9-2, 7-2) is ranked No. 12 in Class 2A.
