Marion girls trimmed by CCA in soccer

The Marion High School girls soccer team came within a minute of defeating Clear Creek Amana in a Wamac Conference game at Marion Tuesday.

Clear Creek Amana scored in the final minute of regulation to tie the game, 1-1, then the visitors won in the first overtime with a golden goal.

Freshman Abby Phillips, subbing for injured Liz Deeney, made 16 saves for Marion.

Marion girls escape in shootout

Freshman Lauren Stepanek's goal as the eighth shooter in a shootout provided the game winner and Marion beat Mount Pleasant, 3-2, Monday in girls soccer at Marion.

Marion's Erica Kelly scored twice in regulation, receiving assists from Lexie Rael and Grace Ehlinger.

Mount Pleasant scored off a free kick outside the box with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game.

Neither team scored in two overtime periods, sending the game to a penalty kick shootout.

Marion was hindered in the shootout when keeper Liz Deeney, who had nine saves, was unable to continue playing after tweaking a hamstring. Freshman Abby Phillips stepped in and had two saves in the shootout.

Stepanek's shot hit the side post and bounced in for the winning goal.

Marion is 5-6.

 

Marion - Girls Soccer

Marion girls kicked by Columbus, 6-0

WATERLOO - Liz Deeney made 23 saves for the Marion Indians Thursday night, but they weren't nearly enough for a victory.

Waterloo Columbus scored six times and blanked the Indians, 6-0, in a Wamac Conference game in Waterloo.

Two of Marion's starters missed the game due to stomach flu.

INDEPENDENCE -- The Independence girls scored on a pair of set pieces and downed Marion, 5-0, Tuesday in a Wamac Conference soccer game.

Marion keeper Abby Phillips had 13 saves.

Marion is 4-5.

Iehl's hat trick leads Marion past Monti

MONTICELLO -- Ashley Iehl scored three goals to power Marion past Monticello, 5-0, Monday in girls soccer.

Haley Clifton and Kaitlyn Henessee also scored goals for Marion.

Stephanie Shinrock had two assists, and Erica  Kelly and Ciera Rodriguez had one apiece.

Abby Phillips had three saves for the shutout.

The Indians dominated the game and put more than 16 shots on goal.
