Marion girls fall in regional final

OSKALOOSA - The Marion softball team's surge through the Class 4A playoffs ended on a disappointing note Tuesday night.

The Indians lost to Pella, 11-1, and fell one game short of reaching the state tournament.

Marion nipped Vinton-Shellsburg, 4-3, in the opening round of the regional tournament. The Indians blanked 15th-ranked Xavier, 1-0, in the regional semifinals before running into Pella.

The Dutch stunned No. 2 Indianola in the semifinals last week and continued their impressive showings by dominating Marion in the regional finals.

Marion ended the season with a 22-15 record. Pella advanced to the state tournament with a 21-13 mark.

Marion softball game moved to Oskaloosa

Marion High School's game against Pella in the regional finals of the Class 4A softball tournament has been moved from Indianola to Oskaloosa for travel purposes, the IGHSAU announced Monday.

The game between Marion (22-14) and Pella (20-13) will start at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Class 4A state tournament in Fort Dodge.

Both teams enjoyed upset victories in the regional semifinals. Marion topped No. 15 Xavier, 1-0, and Pella stunned No. 2 Indianola, 4-0.

Marion is seeking its second trip to the state tournament in school history. The Indians placed sixth in the Class 2A tournament in 1999.

Marion upsets No.15 Saints in regional

Maybe the Marion Indians were too young to be nervous Saturday night against the 15th-ranked Xavier Saints. Or maybe they simply didn't care how young they are.

The Indians had an eighth grader at shortstop. They had another eighth grader behind the plate. They have only one senior on the team and she bats ninth. Yet they all played like season veterans in the biggest game of the year so far.

The young Indians upset the Saints, 1-0, in the Class 4A regional semifinals at Bob Erusha Field and now are one victory away from reaching the state tournament for only the second time in school history.
