Marion - Boys Track

Marion track coach fell into the sport

Scott Immerfall hadn’t planned on being the Marion High School boys head track coach this year.

But now, on the eve of the state tournament, he’s taking a loaded squad to Des Moines with a legitimate chance of bringing home the Class 3A team title.

Already, his hard-working squad of both veterans and newcomers can claim to be the best in school history by having set seven all-time records this season. The coach thinks two more school marks could easily fall this week in Des Moines.

A veteran coach with no track background from his own school sports days, Immerfall is quick to credit the success of this year’s team to the athletes themselves.

“We have a lot of really talented guys. And they worked very, very hard on their own in the off-season to get better.”

It wasn’t until midway through the school year that he found out he would be coaching them. He’s taught social studies at the high school since 1990 and had two previous stints as head track coach from 1991 to 1998 and then from 2000 to 2005.

He stepped down to become an assistant when former Indian runner Chad Zrudsky took over the reigns of the program. But when Zrudsky was appointed assistant high school principal during this past year, Marion athletic director Corby Laube asked Immerfall to take over again.

Immerfall knew he had a good group coming back, but said he was pleasantly surprised when the season started.

“The big thing is these kids came out in really good shape,” he explained. Two runners, Jared Samuelson and Brennen Kelly, went out for wrestling mainly for the training.

Experienced sprinters Derrick Williams, Devin LeBeau, Isaac Smith and Cale Cannoy all reported in peak condition, as did veteran hurdlers Isaac Frazier and Taylor Rogers.

And a void in long distance races was filled when cross country all-stater Lukas Mees joined the track team for the first time in his senior year and brought five of his cross country teammates along.

Mees, who had previously played soccer in the spring, started his own off-season running club. And in his maiden season, he broke the school record in the 3200 by almost 40 seconds. He also set the 1600 record. He’s among the favorites in both events at the state meet.

Another of his cross country buddies, Greg Sam, will be a contender in the 800 and has been a mainstay on relay teams.

Relying on balance and depth, the Indians won the Wamac Conference and district titles as well as five invitational meets. Immerfall noted that in the meets they didn’t win, they lost to Class 4A schools. They have state qualifiers in 15 of 18 events.

They’ll have two competitors in a pair of events: Sam and Kelly in the 800, and throwers Justin Dolley and Zach Borens in the shot put. The 4x200 relay team is ranked first in the state and the other relay teams should be competitive.

“This team has exceeded all of my expectations,” said Immerfall. “If everyone runs their best, I think we’ve got a real good chance to win state. And I’ll be very surprised if we don’t come in the top two or three.”

He’s been this close before, but it was a long time ago.

After his graduation from Winona State University in Minnesota in 1977, Immerfall took his first teaching job at North Linn High School and was head wrestling coach for 12 years. In his second year there, legendary boys and girls track coach Bob Mudd turned over the girls program to him even though he had no experience.

“I’d always played baseball during track season,” Immerfall explained. “But I think Bob knew I could get kids to come out for the team.”

With Mudd as his mentor, his girls won the conference title six times in his nine years as coach and finished in the top 10 at the state four times.

“One year,” he said, “we finished third but came within two points of winning the championship. We had a lot of talent. Just like we have a lot of talent this year.

“They’re all healthy and ready to go. We have a chance to score a lot of points. But no matter what, it’s been a nice season.”

Linn-Mar, Marion boys eye state track crowns

The city of Marion could become the state capital for boys track in Iowa next week.

The Linn-Mar Lions and Marion Indians will be taking strong contingents to the state track meet in Des Moines, with the Lions among the favorites in Class 4A and the surging Indians among the top picks in Class 3A.

Linn-Mar has firepower at the top of its lineup and is seeded first or second in seven events. Marion has impressive depth, having qualified in 15 of 18 events, giving the Indians a good chance of finishing near the top of the team standings.

"I would say if we're not in the top two or three I'd be pretty disappointed," said Marion Coach Scott Immerfall.

In fact, Immerfall thinks the Indians could make a run for the roses and the Class 3A state title.

"I think we could. I think it's a possibility," he said. "If the kids run to their ability, I think we could do it. I think we've got a shot at it."

Marion failed to qualify in just three events, with nobody in the 400 meter dash, the 400 low hurdles or the long jump. The Indians will have at least one entry in every other event and they'll have two entries in the 800 meter run and shot put.

Lukas Mees is seeded No. 1 in the 3200 meter run for Marion and Justin Dolley is seeded No. 2 in the discus. The Indians are also seeded No. 1 in the 4x200 relay.

The Linn-Mar Lions have strong credentials with Josh Evans and Brandon Ophoff both seeded No. 1 in two events. Evans led all state qualifiers Thursday in the 1600 and 3200, while Ophoff tops the charts in the 110 high hurdles and 400 low hurdles.

The Lions are seeded No. 2 in the 4x400 relay, 4x800 relay and shuttle hurdle relay. All told, they qualified in 12 out of 18 events.

Cedar Rapids Prairie is seeded No. 1 in the 4x400 relay and the distance medley with the same quartet of Austin Dellamuth, Jarred Edmonds, Jacob Aune and Demetrius Harper in both events. They won the 4x400 relay at the Drake Relays last month and will be looking to repeat at the state meet. Aune is seeded No. 2 in the 3200 behind Evans.

Timauntay Jones of Jefferson is seeded No. 1 in the 800 meter run, Alec Clasen of Xavier is tied for the No. 1 seed in the high jump, Nick Corbett of Washington is No. 2 in the 400 and Derek Jacobus of Kennedy is No. 2 in the long jump.

Marion taking big squad to state track meet

VINTON - The Marion Indians mauled the competition at the boys Class 3A state qualifying track meet in Vinton Thursday.

As a result, the Indians will be taking a big contingent to the state tournament in Des Moines next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Marion won seven events and captured the team championship with 166.5 points for a whopping 72.5-point victory over runnerup Center Point-Urbana.

The Indians also finished second in six events at the state qualifier. That's significant, because the top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for the state meet. In addition, eight at-large berths in each event from around the state will be announced on Friday.

Lukas Mees claimed three gold medals for Marion. He won the 3200 and 1600 meter runs and anchored the distance medley to the victory stand.

Greg Sam won the 800 meter run for the Indians and Justin Dolley captured the discus. Marion also won the shuttle hurdle relay and the 4x200 relay.

Surging Indians capture own track meet

There was no Drake Relays letdown for the Marion High School boys track team as the Indians ran away with their own 15-team invitational meet Monday night at Thomas Park.

After competing in a school-record nine events in Des Moines over the past weekend, the Indians claimed three individual titles and three relays on their home track to outpoint runnerup DeWitt Central, 135 to 100.5.

“Hopefully, we’re peaking at just the right time for the conference meet Thursday and the districts next week,” said sprinter Devin LeBeau, who won the 200-meter dash and anchored two winning relays. “Then we want to do well at state. And I think we will. Everybody’s clickin’ right now.”

Marion has chalked up a stellar season already, arguably the best in school history. The only two meets the Indians haven’t won were loaded with Class 4A teams. And they’ve run strong in those, too. Along the way, they’ve set seven school records.

Senior Lukas Mees, who’s established marks in the 1600 and 3200 in his only year on the team, is convinced more records will be toppled. “I know for sure the distance medley is well within our reach,” he said after claiming the 3200.

Besides winning the 200 in only the second time he’s run the race this year, LeBeau was on the 4x200 quartet that set a meet record by almost two seconds. Running ahead of him were Derrick Williams, Isaac Smith and Cale Cannoy. The group has the fastest time in Class 3A this spring and fell just short of their mark Monday.

“The weather and track conditions were good,” Cannoy said. “And we were running loose. Derrick gets us off to a fast start, and the rest of us try to sustain it.”

Williams also won the 100-meter dash.

“Our sprinters and especially Devin and Derrick had outstanding nights,” said Marion Coach Scott Immerfall. “All of the kids did really well."

LeBeau and Williams were also on the winning 4x100 team with Isaac Smith and Jerrod Samuelson. And Williams’ younger brother, Cedric, ran the third leg on Marion’s shuttle hurdle relay team that also set a meet record by two seconds.

Isaac Frazier gave his team a huge lead on the shuttle relay, Andrew Davis and then Cedric Williams stretched it out and anchor Taylor Rogers brought it home. The hurdle team
also owns the best time in the state this year in Class 3A.

“We had four great runs tonight, better than we had at Drake,” said Frazier, whose team finished sixth in Des Moines among all schools in the shuttle hurdle. “We’re all running well and getting better.”

Rogers, the senior who has led the hurdlers all season, pulled a hamstring muscle later Monday while finishing second in the 110-meter high hurdles. Immerfall said he didn’t think the injury was serious.
