No. 2 Indians cruise to tourney win

The second-ranked Marion volleyball team won its own Marion Invitational on Saturday at Marion, avenging a loss earlier in the day to Grundy Center 25-12, 25-13 in the final. Xavier also competed.

In pool play, the Indians beat Cascade 21-19, 21-8 and North Linn 21-12, 21-9 before losing to Grundy Center 21-19, 11-21, 15-9.

Marion beat Union 25-21, 25-18 in the semifinals before winning the rematch with Grundy Center in the final.

The Saints beat Durant 21-13, 21-12 and Benton 21-11, 21-15 before losing to Union 16-21, 21-17, 15-10 in pool play. Xavier lost to Grundy Center 25-15, 25-16 in the semifinals.

Prairie jumps to 3rd in volleyball

The Prairie Hawks zoomed seven spots from No. 10 to No. 3 in the new Class 5A volleyball rankings Thursday by the IGHSAU.

Prairie (11-1) won all six of its matches at the Linn-Mar Invitational on Saturday, including four victories over ranked teams. The Hawks returned to Linn-Mar on Tuesday night and beat the Lions again.

Kennedy fell one spot to No. 5 in Class 5A. The Cougars (12-5) knocked off then-No. 1 Cedar Falls on Tuesday night, but the Cougars lost two matches to Cedar Falls at the Osage Tournament on Saturday. Cedar Falls dropped to No. 4 in the poll.

Linn-Mar (12-4) fell two spots to No. 9 this week after its losses to Prairie.

Bettendorf (11-1) is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A. Its only loss was to Prairie in the MVC/MAC Challenge earlier in the season.

The Marion Indians (10-2) stayed No. 2 in Class 4A. West Delaware leads the 4A rankings.

No. 2 Marion rolls by Benton Bobcats

VAN HORNE - The second-ranked Marion volleyball team used a balanced attack to sweep Benton Community, 25-15, 25-10, 25-12, in a Wamac Conference match Tuesday night in Van Horne.

Caitlyn Smith collected 39 assists and two blocks for Marion. Isabella Sade finished with 13 kills, five aces and three blocks. Kaela Halvorson contributed nine kills and six digs.

Olivia Frazier had nine kills for the Indians. Alyssa Thomas had seven kills and seven digs. Morgan Swanger had six kills, six digs and two blocks. Kenzie Redmond provided seven digs.

Marion raised its records to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference.

Cougars jump to 4th in volleyball poll

The Kennedy Cougars climbed three spots to No. 4 in the new Class 5A volleyball rankings Thursday by the IGHSAU.

Kennedy has an 8-3 record and trails Cedar Falls, Bettendorf and Ankeny Centennial in the poll.

Linn-Mar jumped one notch to No. 7 in the 5A rankings. Prairie fell five spots to No. 10.

The Marion Indians stayed No. 2 in Class 4A behind West Delaware.

Marion - Volleyball

No. 2 Indians down Center Point

The Marion High School volleyball survived a blip in the fourth set Tuesday night and defeated Center Point-Urbana, 25-15, 25-15, 18-25, 25-15, in a Wamac Conference match.

Marion, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, raised its records to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.

Haley Dullea collected 21 digs for the Indians and was 17-for-17 on her serves with three aces. Caitlyn Smith finished with 35 assists. Morgan Swanger had 20 digs, went 20-for-20 on serves and had eight kills.

Alyssa Thomas contributed 15 digs, nine kills, three blocks and was 18-for-18 on serves with two aces. Kaela Halvorson had 16 digs and nine kills. Isabella Sade provided 12 kills and five blocks. Olivia Frazier had six kills.
