No. 2 Marion girls spike Vinton

The Marion High School volleyball team began the season Thursday night with a 25-11, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg in a Wamac Conference match at Marion.

The Indians are ranked No. 2 in Class 4A after reaching the semifinals of the state tournament in 2014.

Isabella Sade led Marion with 10 kills and was 17-for-17 on her serves with four aces. Alyssa Thomas contributed eight kills and seven digs and went 16-for-17 on her serves with three aces.

Caitlyn Smith collected 26 assists. Kaela Halvorson had nine digs and four kills. Haley Dullea provided seven digs and was 10-for-10 on serves. Olivia Frazier had four kills. Morgan Swanger finished with eight digs.

 

 

Marion - Volleyball

Prairie jumps to 5th in volleyball

The Cedar Rapids Prairie volleyball team jumped seven spots to No. 5 in the new Class 5A rankings Thursday by the IGHSAU.

The Hawks are now the highest-ranked Metro team in Class 5A after getting off to a 4-0 start. Kennedy is ranked No. 7 in Class 5A and Linn-Mar is ranked No. 8.

The Marion Indians, who open their season Thursday night against Vinton-Shellsburg, stayed in the No. 2 spot in Class 4A.

Iowa City High is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A and West Delaware is No. 1 in Class 4A.

Marion ranked No. 2 in 4A volleyball

The Marion Indians have been ranked No. 2 in the first Class 4A volleyball poll for the 2015 season by the IGHSAU.

The Indians reached the semifinals of the state tournament last year and finished with a 34-8 record. West Delaware is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A heading into the first week of the regular season.

Three Metro teams are ranked in the top-15 in Class 5A with Linn-Mar No. 3, Kennedy No. 5 and Prairie No. 12. Linn-Mar has been bolstered by Amanda Ollinger, an all-state hitter who transferred from Jefferson last year.

Bettendorf and Iowa City High are ranked 1-2 in Class 5A.

Thomas commits to Crookston volleyball

Marion High School senior Alyssa Thomas has decided to continue her volleyball career at the University of Minnesota-Crookston, which is an NCAA Division II school.

Thomas, a 5-foot-10 hitter, helped Marion compile a 34-8 record last season and reach the semifinals of the Class 4A state tournament. She led the Indians with 367 kills and contributed 53 blocks.

Thomas was named first team all-state in Class 4A.

Steggall, Draeger pick their colleges

Marion High School seniors Johanna Steggall and Jamie Draeger will continue their sports careers at the University of Dubuque.

Steggall will play volleyball and participate in track with the Spartans. Draeger will be a member of the track team.

There will be a ceremony for Steggall and Draeger in the school district board room at the high school on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
