Marion upsets City High in volleyball

The Marion Indians had a tough night at the Wamac Conference volleyball tournament Tuesday, but they bounced back in a big way Thursday night.

The Indians knocked off Iowa City High, 15-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 15-6, in a five-set thriller at the Marion gym.

Marion lost both of its matches at the Wamac tournament Tuesday after reaching the quarterfinals, but the Indians regrouped and beat the City High club that just won the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament.

Marion (31-7) is ranked No. 3 in Class 4A. Iowa City High (22-10) is ranked No. 8 in Class 5A.

Alyssa Thomas, who recently became only the third player in school history with more than 1,000 kills, collected 20 more kills Thursday and was 18 for 18 on serves.

Olivia Frazier contributed 15 kills and five blocks. Isabella Sade also had 15 kills.

Caitlyn Smith finished with 32 assists and was 14 for 14 on serves. Amanda Sahm had 26 assists, 12 digs and was 24 for 25 on serves.

Johanna Steggall and Haley Dullea pitched in with 16 digs.

No.3 Indians clipped at Wamac meet

MOUNT VERNON - They held a mini-state volleyball tournament at Mount Vernon High School Tuesday night and called it the Wamac Conference tournament.

Seven ranked teams reached the quarterfinals of the star-studded field, so some awfully good squads fell by the wayside and failed to reach the semifinals in the elite event.

Unfortunately for the Marion Indians, they were one of the teams that fell short.

Clear Creek-Amana swept Marion, 31-29, 25-18, in the quarterfinals, dropping the Indians into the consolation bracket with other disappointed clubs.
