Prairie girls split with City High

The Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team lost half of its lead in the Mississippi Division Thursday night when it split a doubleheader with Iowa City High at the Prairie field.

Prairie won the first game, 1-0, on a three-hit shutout by Shelby Frederick. Iowa City High rebounded with a 5-2 victory in the nightcap for only its third victory of the season.

Prairie fell to 12-6 in the Mississippi Division, now just one game ahead of Xavier and Waterloo West at 11-7 with eight games left in the MVC campaign.

Frederick struck out five batters and did not walk anyone in the 1-0 victory. Anne Cerveny collected the only RBI in the game.

Rylie Kane was the losing pitching for Prairie in the nightcap.

Prairie's overall record is 19-9. Iowa City High is 3-15 in the conference and 3-19 overall.

Prairie softball splits with Waterloo West

WATERLOO - The Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team split a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader against Waterloo West Tuesday in Waterloo.

Waterloo West won the first game, 11-5. Prairie rebounded and claimed the nightcap, 13-6.

Gabi Carter had two hits for Prairie in the opener. Carsyn Waller had two RBIs. Natalie Halvorson suffered the loss.

Neila Bell wins Metro Spotlight Award

Neila Bell of Cedar Rapids Prairie is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bell, a junior, has burst onto the scene this season as a strong hitter and catcher for the Prairie Hawks after getting only seven at-bats last year as a sophomore. She is hitting .359 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 21 games.

Bell went 9-for-18 with three doubles and seven RBIs in six games for Prairie last week. The Hawks swept a doubleheader from Xavier on Tuesday, split a doubleheader with sixth-ranked Jefferson on Wednesday and split another twinbill with 10th-ranked Linn-Mar on Thursday.

Lions, Hawks trade 1-run victories

The Linn-Mar Lions and Prairie Hawks swapped a pair of one-run victories Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball twinbill at Prairie.

Linn-Mar won the first game, 5-4. Prairie took the nightcap, 3-2.

The split left the Lions at 12-5 overall and 9-3 in the MVC. The Hawks are 14-7 overall and 10-4 in the league.

Maddy Ryan collected her 10th victory of the season for Linn-Mar in the first game. Elison Ollinger was 2-for-3 with a triple.

Neila Bell went 2-for-3 for Prairie in the opener. Gabi Carter had two RBIs.

Taylor Moenk went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs for Prairie in the second game. Anne Cerveny was 2-for-3 for the Hawks.

Natalie Halvorson got the victory in relief for Prairie in the nightcap. She was the losing pitcher in the opener.

Prairie sweeps Xavier in softball

The Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Xavier, 3-1 and 7-4, at Prairie Tuesday night.

Natalie Halvorson pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts for Prairie in the 3-1 victory. Kristin Wahlert was 2-for-2 with a run scored and Taylor Moenk hit a sacrifice fly.

Moenk went 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs, two walks and three stolen bases in the second game. Morgan Lewis was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Neila Bell went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs. The Hawks stole seven bases in the game.

Shelby Frederick pitched the first four innings for the victory. Halvorson tossed the last three innings for a save.

Prairie raised its record to 12-5 overall. Xavier fell to 6-8.
