Prairie girls swept by Iowa City West

IOWA CITY - Iowa City West pitchers Shelly Stumpff and Mackenzie Laux pitched complete games Monday as the Women of Troy swept Cedar Rapids Prairie, 5-1 and 6-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader.

Prairie (7-10, 3-7) was held to five hits in the twinbill.

Stumpff pitched a complete game in the opener and had Prairie hitters confused, allowing one run on three hits. She mixed a nice changeup with her fastball, causing Prairie hitters to lunge at pitches.

“In the first game, the changeup hurt us. We did not adjust well at all to the changing of the speeds,” said Prairie Coach Kim Hynek.

West scored early on an RBI single from Alise Miller in the bottom of the first in the opener. The Women of Troy (11-3, 6-2) plated three more runs in the second inning on consecutive RBI singles by Lynn Jehle, Mikaela Morgan and Tatum Klein.

Prairie scored its lone run in the third inning. Katelyn Kuch’s sacrifice fly to left field scored Brittney Lash from third base. Lash doubled to start the inning.

Kuch pitched for Prairie in the opener, going the distance and allowing five runs on 10 hits.

In the nightcap, West’s Alise Miller broke the game open in the third inning with a two-run double for a 4-0 lead. That proved to be more than enough support for Laux, who pitched a two-hit shutout.

Laux did not allow a runner past second base the entire game. She had a speedy delivery and was often ahead in the count, striking out eight batters.

“We need to be more ready early on in the count, that would really help us out,” said Hynek, “but both of their pitchers did a nice job.”

Prairie turned in a solid defensive effort, highlighted by shortstop Kaitlyn Wieland. “I didn’t think our defense did too bad of a job," said Hynek. "I thought Wieland was very solid at shortstop, she made some really nice plays.”

Carter clubs 2 HRs in Prairie sweep

Prairie’s Gabby Carter wasn’t known as a power hitter going into Tuesday night's doubleheader against Cedar Rapids Washington. You may want to add that to her arsenal now. Carter slugged two home runs and notched 6 RBIs in Prairie’s 26-8 rout over Washington in the second game at the Washington softball field.

“Those home runs felt really good because those are among the first I have ever had,” said Carter of her performance at the plate.

Prairie's Taylor Stecklein also had a stellar night at the plate, going 7-for-7 in the second game and collecting 10 hits for the twinbill. The Hawks had 24 hits in game two.

“Our kids just did a good job at being patient and hitting good pitches,” said Prairie Coach Kim Hynek. “Hopefully, we will continue to hit the ball like we did tonight.”

Prairie won the first game 9-4 and Carter’s pitching prowess was showcased. She came on in relief of Katelyn Kuch in the second inning and didn’t allow an earned run the rest of the game. Carter only faced 13 batters in the final four innings.

“You just have to hit your spots and do what you have to do to keep them off the bases,” said Carter.

Prairie travels to Iowa City West for a doubleheader Thursday and Washington hosts Dubuque Wahlert.

Hawks swept by Jefferson in softball

After waiting an extra week to get its season underway, the Jefferson bats came out hot Tuesday night at Prairie High School. The J-Hawks pounded out 16 hits in a 12-0 six-inning win in game one, then held the Hawks off 9-5 behind 12 hits in the nightcap to sweep the Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader.

“I was pleased with how we hit the ball tonight,” Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer said. “We have really been working on getting on top of the ball and we did a good job of that tonight.”

Jefferson (2-0) came into the night without having played a game. The J-Hawks' opener last week against Iowa City West was rained out. Prairie (2-1) was coming off a non-conference loss to Mount Vernon on Saturday.
