Saints, J-Hawks keep rolling in softball

The Xavier Saints and Jefferson J-Hawks continue to set the pace for Metro softball teams, with several clubs not far behind.

The Saints, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, won all four of their games this past week and raised their record to an impressive 18-2. The J-Hawks, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, captured all five of their games and are sitting at 19-4.

The Washington Warriors, enjoying a strong year, went 5-1 this past week and have a 16-5 overall mark. Prairie is 16-9 and Kennedy 14-8.

The Linn-Mar Lions had a tough week, losing six of seven games. That dropped their record to 16-9. Marion lost five games and fell to 6-16.

Carter stars as Prairie sweeps Tigers

CEDAR FALLS - Gabi Carter belted two home runs and drove in seven runs Tuesday as Prairie ripped Cedar Falls, 11-0, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader in Cedar Falls.

Prairie won the second game, 6-2.

Amanda Stecklein went 3-for-4 and hit a home run for the Hawks in the first game. Carter also was 3-for-4. Kristen Wahlert was 2-for-4.

Prairie - Softball

Metro softball enjoying strong year

High school softball in the Metro area is enjoying a strong year this season  and there's a mad scramble to see who has the best record.

The Linn-Mar Lions have the most wins with a 15-3 overall record, but Xavier, Jefferson and Prairie all all right behind with 14 victories.

Washington and Kennedy have rebounded this season and have 11 wins apiece.

Here are the Metro records through Sunday:

No.8 Prairie rolls by Wahlert

DUBUQUE - The eighth-ranked Prairie softball team swept a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill at Dubuque Wahlert Thursday, 10-0 and 13-1.

Both games lasted only five innings.

Gabi Carter went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs in the first game. Natalie Rumer went 2-for-3 with a home run. Halle Lueck went 2-for-4 and Lauren Kuch was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Natalie Halvorson pitched a four-hit shutout in the opener with 10 strikeouts.

Carter went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and swatted another home run in the second game. Rumer went 3-for-4. Kuch was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Lueck was 3-for-4. Amanda Pipolo had two hits and Kristin Wahlert drove in two runs.

Shelby Frederick pitched a six-hitter with three strikeouts in the nightcap.

Lueck, Carter help Prairie sweep Wash

Halle Lueck hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning and made a diving catch in the seventh as No. 8 Prairie trimmed Washington, 4-3, in the first game of a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Prairie Tuesday night.

Gabi Carter belted a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the fifth inning as Prairie captured the nightcap, 11-1.

Lueck gave Prairie the lead with her two-run double in the opener, then protected the advantage with her game-winning catch.

Lauren Kuch went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Prairie in the first game. Carter and Kristin Wahlert also had two hits. Natalie Halvorson pitched a complete game with six strikeouts for the Hawks.

Carter went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs in the second game. Lueck was 2-for-4 and scored three times. Natalie Rumer was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Kuch was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Shelby Frederick tossed a complete game for the victory.
