Johnston wins Prairie volleyball title

The Johnston Dragons captured the top prize at the Prairie Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.

Johnston and Holy Trinity both finished with 4-1 records in the round-robin tournament, but Johnston won the tiebreaker.

Johnston is ranked No. 2 in Class 5A and Holy Trinity is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A.

The sixth-ranked Prairie Hawks finished 3-2. The Hawks defeated Western Dubuque, West Branch and West Burlington. They lost to Johnston and Holy Trinity.

Kate Busswitz collected 26 kills in the tournament for Prairie. Megan Sprengeler finished with 19 kills.

Mallory Jones contributed 40 assists and was 23-for-23 on serves. Kristin Wahlert had 11 digs and four aces. Rylee Blood and Jenni Lockhart had nine
digs apiece. Rachel Shelangoski had nine kills and Blood had three aces.

Prairie jumps to 6th in volleyball

Cedar Rapids Prairie climbed four spots to No. 6 in the Class 5A volleyball rankings Thursday by the IGHSAU.

The Hawks (17-7) were ranked 10th a week ago and are the only Metro school in the 5A rankings.

The Marion Indians (23-3) held onto the No. 3 spot in the Class 4A poll. The Xavier Saints (13-11) dropped from 11th to 15th in the 4A rankings.

Prairie rolls by Waterloo West

WATERLOO - Kendra Gaskill collected 18 assists Tuesday night as Cedar Rapids Prairie swept Waterloo West, 25-13, 25-21, 25-13, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match in Waterloo.

Kate Busswitz finished with 14 kills, six digs, five aces and two blocks. Makenzie Soeken provided 10 kills and five blocks.

Mallory Jones had 15 assists and was 13-for-13 on serves. Jenni Lockhart contributed five digs, three aces and was 10-for-10 on serves.

   

Prairie - Volleyball

Clippers win Prairie volleyball title

Clear Creek-Amana won all five of its matches to claim top honors at the Cedar Rapids Prairie volleyball tournament Saturday.

The Clippers rallied to defeat Prairie, 19-21, 21-16, 15-13, in what turned out to be the championship match in the round-robin tournament. It was Prairie's only loss of the day and the Hawks placed second with a 4-1 record.

Kate Busswitz collected 38 kills, 17 digs and nine blocks in the tournament. Megan Sprengeler provided 36 kills and four aces. Kenzie Soeken had 26 kills.

Jennie Lockhart had 18 digs and seven aces. Kristin Wahlert had 15 digs and seven aces. Rachel Shelangoski had nine blocks.

Washington lost all five of its matches, including a 23-21, 21-19 setback to Prairie.

Marion stays No. 3 in volleyball poll

The Marion Indians remained in the No. 3 spot in the Class 4A volleyball rankings by the IGHSAU.

Marion has an 18-2 record this season.

The Xavier Saints slipped two spots from No. 9 to No. 11 in Class 4A. The Prairie Hawks fell one spot from No. 9 to No. 10 in Class 5A.

Harlan topped the 4A rankings and Bettendorf led the 5A poll.
