Johnston wins Prairie volleyball title

The Johnston Dragons captured top honors at the Cedar Rapids Prairie volleyball tournament Saturday.

Johnston and Southeast Polk both finished with a 4-1 records in the round-robin tournament, but Johnston beat Southeast Polk 2-0 in their head-to-head match for the tiebreaker.

Prairie went 3-2 in the tournament and placed third. The Hawks beat HolyTrinity (2-1), West Branch (2-0) and Western Dubuque (2-0). They lost to Johnston (2-0) and Southeast Polk (2-1).

All six teams in the tournament are ranked by the IGHSAU.

1. Johnston 4-1, 2. Southeast Polk 4-1, 3. Prairie 3-2, 4. West Branch 2-3, 5. Western Dubuque, 2-3, 6. Holy Trinity 0-5.

Prairie - Volleyball

No. 5 Prairie Hawks sweep Waterloo West

The fifth-ranked Prairie volleyball team swept Waterloo West, 25-16, 25-12, 25-11, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match Tuesday night at Prairie.

Kate Busswitz led a balanced attack with 11 kills. Kenzie Soeken had 10 kills, Megan Oldenburger six kills and Maddie Bell five kills.

Kendra Gaskill rolled up 33 assists. Taylor Fisher contributed 14 digs and Rylee Blood had nine digs.

Blood, Oldenburger, Gaskill and Haley Stecklein led the serving.

Prairie cruises to own volleyball title

The fifth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie volleyball team sailed to theĀ championship of the 6th Annual Michelle Starcevich Invitational Saturday with five straight victories in the Prairie gym.

The Hawks won all five of their matches in straight sets, including a 21-16, 21-12 conquest of 11th-ranked Ankeny. The Hawks also swept Muscatine (21-10, 21-11), Mediapolis (21-15, 21-11), Washington (21-11, 21-13) and Clear-Creek Amana (21-10, 21-13).

The Washington Warriors finished the tournament with a 1-4 record. The Warriors topped Muscatine, 21-13, 21-17.

Metro teams jockey in volleyball poll

You could probably throw a blanket over the volleyball teams at Prairie, Kennedy and Linn-Mar and pick a different winner every day.

The new Class 5A rankings were released Thursday by the IGHSAU and it showed Prairie at No. 5, Kennedy at No. 6 and Linn-Mar at No. 7 heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

Marion continued to be ranked No. 2 in Class 4A.

No. 3 Prairie sweeps Little Hawks

IOWA CITY - Kate Busswitz and Kenzie Soeken led a balanced attack with 10 kills Tuesday night as the third-ranked Prairie Hawks swept No. 14 Iowa City High, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match in Iowa City.

Kendra Gaskill finished with 30 assists and two aces for Prairie. Megan Oldenburger had eight kills. Busswitz collected six blocks.

Kristin Wahlert came up with 15 digs for the Hawks and Haley Stecklein had 10. Stecklein also had two aces. Maddie Bell had three blocks.
