Prairie spikes J-Hawks in 4 sets

The Prairie Hawks collected 57 kills Tuesday night and clipped Jefferson, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Jefferson.

Rachel Butz led the kill-shot artists with 14 slams. Megan Sprengeler had 13 kills. Meghan Busswitz contributed 12 kills and three solo blocks at the net.

Halle Lueck rolled up 52 assists for Prairie (6-5) and had 14 digs. Malia Gudenkauf had 12 digs and three ace serves. Amanda Stecklein came up with 13 digs for Prairie.

Amanda Ollinger led Jefferson (7-7) with 27 kills and 19 digs. Kaylie Zitek collected 40 assists and three aces. Keke Pledge had nine digs. Kayla Jaschen contributed eight digs and three kills.

Prairie whips Wahlert in volleyball

Prairie crushed Dubuque Wahlert in three sets Tuesday in MVC volleyball at Prairie.

The Hawks won by scores of 25-19, 25-7, 25-20.

Meghan Busswitz led Prairie with 10 kills. Megan Sprengeler had eight.

Halle Lueck distributed 28 assists. Busswitz hit a sizzling .533.

Prairie also had 11 service aces behind a 90 percent serving night.

Warriors spike Prairie in straight sets

For the Cedar Rapids Washington volleyball team, a new coach means pretty much the same system that took them to within one match of the state tournament last year.

One in a bunch of first-year Metro coaches, Amy Faulkner took over the Warrior program on the first day of practice in August when former mentor Kari Lombardi resigned to move with her family to West Des Moines.

Faulkner is hardly a rookie, however, having served as an assistant the past three years and as a club-team coach for many of the girls before that.

Still, it was a milestone of sorts for her team to notch its first really convincing victory of the young season Tuesday night by sweeping Prairie in three sets on the Hawks' home court.

Prairie wins opener in MVC volleyball

WATERLOO — The Cedar Rapids Prairie volleyball team defeated Waterloo West, 25-10, 26-24, 25-18, in the Mississippi Valley Conference opener in Waterloo on Tuesday night.

Kate Busswitz collected seven kills and six ace serves for the Hawks (2-2). Megan Sprengler had 11 digs. Meghan Busswitz and Rachael Butz had five kills. Amanda Stecklein chipped in with five aces.

Prairie will host Washington next Tuesday in the home opener. Prairie's two losses this season have been to top-ranked Bettendorf and No.5 Pleasant Valley.

Prairie dumped by PV in 5A regionals

PLEASANT VALLEY -- Second-ranked Pleasant Valley bounced Prairie in three straight sets Thursday in the semifinals of the Class 5A regional volleyball tournament.

Pleasant Valley won by scores of 25-14, 25-19, 25-10.

The Spartans advance to play Cedar Rapids Washington in a regional final Tuesday night at West Branch.
