Koberg sparks Cougars to Spirit Hollow title

BURLINGTON - Conner Koberg fired a 1-over-par 73 Saturday to claim medalist honors and lead Kennedy to the team championship at the Spirit Hollow Invitational at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington.

Frank Lindwall of Washington placed second with a 2-over 74.

Kennedy topped Dowling for the championship, 310-318. Linn-Mar finished third, Xavier fourth, Washington fifth and Prairie seventh.

Davis Sutton placed fourth for Kennedy with a 77. Trevor McCann led Linn-Mar with a 79. Matt Neumeyer shot a 79 for Xavier. Mitch Lorenz topped Prairie with an 83.

Lindwall, Gonder tie for golf title

Cedar Rapids Washington teammates Frank Lindwall and Jabe Gonder shot 3-over-par 39's Thursday to share medalist honors in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Gardner Golf Course.

J.D. Goodfellow of Iowa City West also shared top honors with a 39.

Washington won the four-team meet at 161.

Lindwall takes honors at MVC golf

Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore Frank Lindwall fired a 2-under-par 34 Thursday to claim medalist honors at a Mississippi Valley Conference golf meet at Twin Pines.

Sean Fernholz of Cedar Falls placed second with a 35.

Trevor McCann of Linn-Mar and Nile Happel of Jefferson shot even-par rounds of 36 to tie for third place with Matt Bauman of Cedar Falls.

Linn-Mar, Cedar Falls and Washington all finished with four-man scores of 148. They finished 1-2-3 in the team standings, respectively, based on the fifth-score tiebreaker.

Frank Lindwall wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore Frank Lindwall is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Lindwall has blossomed into one of the top golfers in the state this year despite being only a 10th grader. He ranks fifth in Class 4A with a 36.6 average for nine holes and is averaging 72.67 strokes for 18 holes.

Lindwall took medalist honors at the Blue Top Ridge Invitational in Riverside this past Tuesday with a 1-under-par 71.

He finished second at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet on Tuesday, Aug. 14 with a 3-under 69 at Gates Park in Waterloo. He placed ninth at the Linn-Mar Invitational at Hunters Ridge last Monday with a 6-over 78.

Lindwall has dramatically improved his stroke average this season. He averaged 40.32 strokes for nine holes and 79.20 strokes for 18 holes last season as a freshman.

Lindwall tied for 10th at the Class 4A state meet last fall with a 36-hole total of 80-80=160.

The Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls will resume next Sunday.

Lindwall wins title at Blue Top Ridge

RIVERSIDE - Frank Lindwall of Cedar Rapids Washington fired a 1-under-par 71 Tuesday in steamy conditions to claim medalist honors at the Blue Top Ridge Invitational in Riverside.

J.D. Goodfellow of Iowa City West finished a stroke back with an even-par 72.

West Des Moines Valley won the team championship at 309. The Washington Warriors tied for sixth place at 323 with Ankeny Centennial and Iowa City West.
