Bertsch, Kamin compete at national golf meet

DUBUQUE - Maddie Bertsch of Xavier High School and MJ Kamin from Washington High School competed in the 87th WWGA National Junior Championship at the Dubuque Golf & Country Club this past week.

Bertsch reached the semifinals of the First Flight championship playoffs Thursday before losing to Melissa VanSistine of Caledonia, Ill., in 19 holes.

Kamin defeated Rochelle Beardsley of Peosta, 4 & 3, to win the First Flight consolation bracket Friday. Kamin won the match with a birdie on the 15th hole.

Kamin, Bertsch, Winker honored in golf

MJ Kamin of Washington, Maddie Bertsch of Xavier and Grace Winker of Xavier have been named first team all-state by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association.

Kamin was honored in Class 5A while Bertsch and Winker were selected in Class 4A.

Ali Lindo of Kennedy was named second team all-state in Class 5A. Lisa Olberding of Xavier was named second team all-state in Class 4A.

Kamin wins Optimist district golf title

MARSHALLTOWN - Cedar Rapids Washington junior MJ Kamin shot a 73 Thursday to claim medalist honors at the Optimist Junior Golf district tournament at the Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.

Kamin qualified for the Optimist International Junior Championships to be held in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in July.

Kamin won Thursday's event by two shots. There were 22 golfers in the tournament.

Rain cancels final round of 5A golf

PANORA - Inclement weather Wednesday forced cancellation of the final round of the Class 5A girls golf tournament. The event was cut short to the 18 holes played Tuesday.

Cedar Rapids Washington's MJ Kamin finished in seventh place, five strokes behind Anna Cullinan of Pleasant Valley and Kelsy Shay of Waukee.

Kennedy's Ali Lindo tied for 12th and Prairie's Taylor Utter tied for 33rd.

Waukee won the team race.

Kamin in 7th at state golf meet

PANORA - Cedar Rapids Washington's MJ Kamin shot a 9-over par 81 Tuesday and is in seventh place after the first round of the Class 5A state girls golf tournament at Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

Kamin is five strokes behind Anna Cullinan of Pleasant Valley and Kelsy Shay of Waukee.

Kennedy's Ali Lindo is tied for 12th with an 85. She is nine shots back.

Prairie's Taylor Utter shot a 95 and is tied for 33rd.
