Warriors win in a shootout

IOWA CITY -- The difference between No. 7 and No. 8 was not decided in regulation time Thursday. Nor was it resolved in overtime.

No, No. 7 Washington had to drill a pair of penalty kicks in a shootout to beat No. 8 Iowa City West, 2-1.

The win boosted Washington 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Regulation ended with the score tied 1-1. Max Versteegh scored on an assist from Brandon Besong for Washington's goal.

West won the sophomore game, 1-0.

Warriors whack Wahlert in boys soccer

Monday was not a good day to be ranked among the top two teams in Class 2A boys soccer.

Class 3A No. 7 Washington scored three first-half goals and drubbled Class 2A No. 2 Dubuque Wahlert, 3-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Kingston Stadium.

Xavier, the No. 1 Class 2A team, also was beaten Monday by Cedar Falls, 3-2.

Washington scored its first goal in the 17th minute on a penalty kick by Austin Bergstrom. The Warriors' Brandon Besong found the back of the net in the 34th minute and Max Versteegh's rebound goal one minute later pushed Washington's lead to 3-0.

Washington improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MVC.

Washington won the sophomore game, 1-0.

Goals -- CRW: Austin Bergstrom, Brandon Besong, Max Versteegh; DW: Samuel Koenig. Assists -- CRW: Bergstrom, Evan Zalesky.

Warriors blank East in MVC opener

WATERLOO -- Evan Zalesky and Kimu Kasha scored two goals apiece to Lead No. 7 Cedar Rapids Washington past Waterloo East, 6-0, Thursday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys soccer game.

Max Versteegh and Austin Bergstrom added goals for the Warriors (4-1, 1-0 MVC). Evan Fisher had two assists.

Cameron Harrison and Hunter Loushin combined at keeper for the shutout.

Warriors whip Davenport Central

Washington's David Nega scored a goal six minutes into the game and the sixth-ranked Warriors rolled past Davenport Central, 5-1, Monday night in a boys soccer game at Kingston Stadium.

Nega's goal came off an assist from Jack Sundermann, who scored a goal in the 22nd minute on an assist from Brandon Besong. Sundermann's goal was his fourth in as many games for the Warriors (3-1).

Jacob Jensen, Max Versteegh and Josiah Javier also scored goals for the Warriors. Versteegh's goal was his third of the season.

The Warriors built a 3-1 lead by halftime.

Washington's next game is Thursday at Waterloo East.

Warriors win twice at Iowa City West tourney

IOWA CITY -- No. 6 Cedar Rapids Washington bounced back from an opening 2-0 loss to No. 4 West Des Moines Valley to beat Southeast Polk and No. 13 Muscatine in the Iowa City West Invitational boys soccer classic Saturday at the University of Iowa Fields.

Jack Sundermann scored a pair of goals in Washington's 4-1 win over Southeast Polk. Max Versteegh and Brandon Besong also had goals.

Sundermann and Versteegh scored goals in the Warriors' 2-0 win over Muscatine. Besong had two assists. Keeper Camron Harris pitched the shutout.

Washington is 2-1.
