Early goal dooms Wash in state soccer

DES MOINES – Top-seeded Iowa City West isn’t a team that needs many breaks.

The Trojans have speed, power and skill and in Thursday’s Class 3A state quarterfinal match-up with Cedar Rapids Washington, they got an early break that set the tone for the entire match.

West’s  Mueng Sunday broke loose in the penalty area and was taken down just 51 seconds into play. Ben Troester then stepped up and banged the free kick past Washington keeper Gunnar Lenzen. The Trojans added two more first-half goals and went on to a 3-0 victory over the Warriors at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

Warriors learn lesson; headed to state

J.P. Graham and his Cedar Rapids Washington boys soccer team remembered what cost them in an earlier loss this season to Cedar Falls.

"We gave the a couple of goals on dead ball situations," Graham said of his team's 3-2 loss to the Tigers during the regular season. "We worked on it for two weeks and it showed today. We were a lot more comfortable out there today."

The Warrior defense stood tall and the offense came through with a pair of late first-half goals to post a 2-0 win in the Class 3A Substate 3 final at Kingston Stadium.

No. 4-ranked Washington (14-4) will playtop-seeded Iowa City West (17-1)  in the state quarterfinals Thursday at 5 p.m. in Des Moines. No. 8 Cedar Falls closes its season at 13-6.

Wash, Kennedy advance on shootout wins

Each Class 3A semifinal game was tied 1-1 after two overtimes and decided in shootouts.

In the contest that started in drizzle at 5 p.m., fourth-ranked Washington escaped a scrappy Waterloo West bunch 5-4 on penalty kicks.

And in the nightcap that ended at 10:15 in a misty fog, fifth-ranked Kennedy squeaked by a young Dubuque Hempstead crew 4-2 in the shootout.
