Washington girls claim tennis crown

AMES - The Cedar Rapids Washington girls tennis team captured the Class 2A state title Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Clinton in the finals in Ames.

Washington also won the state title 27 years ago in 1987, making this the second state title in school history.

Hannah Sherman, Kelly King, Jennifer Greif and Callie Cook gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead in the singles matches against Clinton. Lilly Hartman and Rina Moore clinched the state title with a 6-2, 6-7, 1-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.

The Warriors trimmed Des Moines Roosevelt, 5-3, in the semifinals. Sherman, Greif and Cook gave Washington a 3-3 split in the singles matches, then the doubles teams of King/Sherman and Cook/Greif prevailed to win the meet.

Washington - Girls Tennis

Xavier's Jasper finishes third in 1A singles

Xavier's Allison Jasper defeated Dubuque Wahlert's Courtney Schneider, 5-7, 6-0, 10-7 to finish third in the Class 1A state singles tournament Friday in Iowa City.

Jasper lost to eventual champion Haley Resnick of Davenport Assumption in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0.

In Class 2A action at Ames, Kennedy's Jessica Pedersen finished fourth, falling to eventual champion Chloe Jefferies in a three-set semifinal before dropping a staight-set decision to  Ames' Judith Fan

Washington - Girls Tennis

Jasper, Pedersen advance to state semifinals

Xavier's Allison Jasper and Prairie's Jessica Pedersen advanced to the state tennis singles semifinals on Thursday as did the Washington doubles team of Vale and Magui Caro.

Jasper, playing in the 1A tournament at the University of Iowa, defeated Emily Jurgensen of Ballard, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and downed Emily Ahlers of LeMars, 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. She will meet defending state champion Haley Resnick of Davenport Assumption in Friday's semifinals.

Xavier's Kylie DeWees won her first set against Boone's Emma Rose before she was forced to retire from the tournament due to injury.

In Class 2A at Ames, Pedersen will meet West Des Moines Valley's Chloe Jefferies in the semifinals. Pedersen downed Sioux City North's Becca Aleynik, 6-4, 6-4 followed by a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kayla Kuethe of Waukee, 6-1, 6-4

Wash girls win at state tennis

ELDRIDGE - The Washington Warriors defeated Iowa City High, 5-1, in the opening round of the Class 2A state tennis tournament Tuesday in Eldridge.

The Warriors advance to the state semifinals June 7 in Ames.

Hannah Sherman, Rina Moore, Kelly King, Jennifer Greif and Callie Cook won their singles matches for Washington.

Washington - Girls Tennis

Wash girls win regional tennis title

The Cedar Rapids Washington girls tennis team won the Class 2A regional title Saturday with a 5-0 conquest of Iowa City West at the Kennedy courts.

The Warriors reached the finals by blanking Kennedy in the semifinals, 5-0.

Washington did not lose a set the entire day.
