Wash girls net 2 victories

The Cedar Rapids Washington girls tennis team collected a pair of victories in the Quad Cities on Saturday.

The Warriors topped Bettendorf, 7-2, and blanked Davenport West, 9-0.

Hannah Sherman, Jennifer Greif, Kelly King and Callie Cook won both of their singles matches for Washington.

Warrior pair falls in state finals

Cedar Rapids Washington’s Rina Moore and Lilly Hartman knew they had a tough task when they faced the top-seeded doubles team from Urbandale in Friday afternoon’s Class 2A state  championship.

Madeline Heer and Michelle Van Roekel, after all, had a perfect 17-0 record this season.  In the two years they’ve played the together, the two seniors were 32-1. Their only blemish came in last season’s state tournament when they lost to the eventual state champs from Ames in a semifinal match.

To advance into Friday’s finals at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center, the Urbandale duo had dispatched an Ames tandem that still had one of the girls from the title team.

“We’d watched them and knew they were very good,” said Hartman.

Wash's King eliminated in state singles

Singles play at the girls 2A state tennis tournament ran pretty much true to form Thursday in the opening rounds at the Cedar Rapids Veterans Memorial Tennis Center.

Top-seeded freshman Jaci Cochrane of Fort Dodge cruised to two victories by 6-0, 6-0 scores, while second-seeded sophomore Eve Small of Iowa City High won 6-0, 6-0 and then 6-2, 6-3.

Both girls are undefeated this year.

Washington - Girls Tennis

Wash-Kennedy doubles to meet in semis

Neither was seeded coming into the girls high school state tennis tournament, but either a doubles team from Cedar Rapids Washington or Kennedy will be playing for the Class 2A championship Friday afternoon.

After pulling off a pair of second round upsets Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Tennis Center, Warriors Lilly Hartman and Rina Moore face Cougars Sarah Lasecki and Jessica Pedersen in Friday morning's semifinals.

The winner will play for the title against the top-seeded Urbandale team or fourth-seeded Ames.

Washington - Girls Tennis

Warriors ousted from team tennis

BETTENDORF - The Washington girls tennis season came to an end Saturday in the Class 2A regional finals.

The Warriors were beaten by Bettendorf, 5-3.

Kristin King and Lilly Hartman won their singles matches, and Rina Moore and Jennifer Greif teamed up to win in doubles for the Warriors.

Washington whipped Davenport North, 5-0, earlier in the day in a semifinal match. The Warriors did not lose a game.
