Rima shines at Prairie boys take 2nd

WATERLOO – Prairie junior Jalen Rima was named the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year as the Hawks finished second at the divisional meet Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.

Rima won the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Teammate Tysen VanDraska took top honors in the 1600 and 800. He was also on the winning 4 x 800 relay.

Dubuque Hempstead won the team title with 139 points, six better than Prairie. Washington finished third with 103 points while Xavier was fifth with 57.

Other Prairie winners included Jake Moore in the 3200 and Trevor Northrup in the 100, where he edged out Rima at the tape.

Washington’s Isaiah Nimmers won the 400 hurdles. The Warriors also won three relays - the shuttle-hurdle, the 4x100 and 4x400.

Prairie’s Bill Schwartz was named the divisional coach of the year.

Pinckney retiring as Wash track coach

Bill Pinckney is retiring as the boys track coach at Cedar Rapids Washington after 19 years and two state titles.

Pinckney said Maurice "Mo" Blue will become the head coach after this season. Pinckney and Blue have been serving as co-head coaches for several years.

Pinckney, 62, has been an educator for 26 years.

"It's time for me to be done," he said Friday night after the Wilkinson Relays at Kingston Stadium. "I have a lot of things I want to do. I'm looking forward to it."

Washington won back-to-back state titles in 2009 and 2010. "We were loaded. It was so much fun," Pinckney said.

He said the state championships were the highlights of his career. "And the kids coming back," he remarked. "I love to communicate with them. That's the biggest thrill for me."

The Warriors have been rebuilding the track program the past few years and have some promising young athletes on the squad.

"Maurice is going to do a great job," said Pinckney. "The kids are in great hands."

Bokoyo wins sprints for J-Hawks

Merje' Bokoyo has arrived at Cedar Rapids Jefferson this year with speed.

Bokoyo, a transfer student from Galesburg, Ill., captured the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the John Ask Relays Saturday on a cool, sunny day at Kingston Stadium.

Bokoyo claimed the 100 meter dash in a hand-held time of 10.92 seconds, which Jefferson Coach Ron Tower said would translate to about a 11.15 electronic clocking.

"That's a good time. No question, this early, in the cold," said Tower.

Bokoyo helped Galesburg finished third in the 4x100 relay and sixth in the 4x200 relay at the Class 2A state meet in Illinois last year. Tower said Bokoyo is originally from the Congo in Africa.
