Burke gets a dose of life's hurdles

It was the first time in her life she’d run the grueling 400-meter hurdles, and when Washington sophomore Elena Burke came to the next to last hurdle at Tuesday’s Warrior Invitational meet she stopped.

Putting her right hand on the crossbar, she wearily lifted herself over a barricade nearly chest high on her petite frame.  And while the spunky sprinter had led the junior varsity race from the start, she ended up in second on a photo finish.

“I lost some steam,” she explained afterward. “I really didn’t think I’d make it over those last two hurdles.”

Serious as she is about her young track career, Burke is fully aware that what she faces on the straight-away at Kingston Stadium is minor compared to the life and death obstacles she witnessed first-hand on her recent spring break.

Going along with her family physician mother Dr. Maria Doce on a medical mission to the impoverished rural area of El Salvador, her 16-year-old eyes were opened to a whole new world.

“We gave glasses to people who had hardly been able to see before. And we gave hearing aids to little kids for the first time in their lives," Elena said.  “They were so happy.  It was an amazing experience. So many of them don’t have anything, not even lights or running water.

“It makes you appreciate what we do have.”

Burke, whose father James is a Spanish teacher at Kennedy High School, said her mom had gone to the small Central American country last year with a church group from Newton.  Dr. Doce thought her daughter needed to see poverty up-close. And be able to help.

At first on the week-long trip, Burke was assigned routine tasks such as directing patients.  As she became more accustomed, however, she even did some rudimentary vision screening and other more hands-on assistance to those so desperately in need.

“I would say it was life-changing,” she said.

Burke, who is also a cheerleader at Washington and plays oboe in the orchestra, came back home with a new perspective.

Not that it made it any easier to get over those hurdles.

At this week’s meet she did team-up with three veteran seniors for a fast runner-up finish in the shuttle hurdle relay. And in the 100-meter hurdles, she dropped her personal best time.

As for that long run around the entire oval with those wooden barriers in the way every fourth or fifth stride:

“I lost a lot of energy at the final curve,” she admitted when it was over. “I need to work on my endurance.”

Warriors show speed, but Lions take title

In its own Warrior Invitational women’s track meet Tuesday night at Kingston Stadium, Washington unleashed a trio of sophomore sprinters who teamed with some veterans to nearly topple favored Linn-Mar.

Speedster Kadejah Sanders led the Warrior contingent with four wins, including her first-ever victory in the 100 meter dash. She joined fellow sophomores Megan Muller and Jasmyne Jones for first-place finishes in the 4x100, 4x200 and 800 sprint medley relays.

In all, Washington won eight of 19 events in the seven-team field. Linn-Mar claimed five wins, but superior depth allowed the Lions to outpoint the Warriors, 134-123, to clinch the team title.

With three field event champions, Prairie came in third with 105 points and Kennedy was fourth with 79.

“I knew it was going to be competitive,” said Washington Coach Frank Scherrman. “This is our best meet this year. I’m happy with it.”

Sanders, who started out in track at McKinley Middle School in seventh grade and competed with the varsity last year, was the only 100-meter runner to crack 13 seconds in windy conditions and won her race convincingly.

“I’m getting better,” she said afterward, “thanks to my coaches, who keep pushing me. But we’ve got a lot of good sprinters on our team. In the relays I just try to put us in the lead if I start or make sure nobody passes me.”

She ran the first legs of the 4x100 and sprint medley and anchored the 4x200. Besides the other sophs, senior Taylor Vogel ran on two of the winning relays and senior Brooke Foreman on the other one.

Foreman also collected extremely easy wins in her specialty, the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles.

Scherrman said Sanders is blessed with pure speed and is bound to get faster as she improves her technique.

“She’s very coachable,” he said. “She’s eager to learn, and she works very hard. It’s nice to think she’s only a sophomore.”

The young Warriors quartet has already qualified for the Drake Relays later this month in the 4x200. Under better weather conditions, Sanders thinks they have a shot at qualifying in other events, as well.

“We have a lot of talent,” she said. “I feel we have a chance this year, too.”

Washington - Girls Track

Warriors 3rd at Jeff Invitational

The weather was not ideal for a big track meet Saturday afternoon at Kingston Stadium, but that didn’t slow some of the Metro athletes.

The Linn Mar Lions had a thrilling moment as they beat the rain and the field on their way to setting a Jefferson Invitational meet record in the distance medley. The Lions relay of Halley Morgan, Courtney Major, Audra Schmeinke, and Rachel Perry shocked powerhouses Iowa City West and Cedar Falls by running their way in to the records with a time of 4:21.26.

The time broke the previous record of 4:22.07 set by a foursome from Iowa City West in 2001.

Perry, despite it being her first ever 800, played hero in the win as she caught Iowa City West’s runner down the home stretch to get the win and the record.

“That was the plan. The coaches told me to duck behind the leader and pass them at the end,” Perry said of coming from behind. “I thought I could pass her on the back stretch, but decided to wait until the end to pass. I didn’t want to get passed at the end (if I passed her too early), it is the worst.”

While a Lions' relay roared, the usually strong Jefferson relay teams limped their way to a few disappointing finishes.

The J-Hawks took a huge hit when Taylor Jacobson, part of last year's 4x200 state champion relay team, pulled a hamstring in the 4x200.

“I took the handoff and felt pain right at the curve,” Jacobson said. “I knew something was wrong on the backstretch.”

The injury kept Jacobson out for the rest of the day, but it is unclear how long she will miss.

“The coaches just checked it out. I will probably have it looked at tomorrow or something,” Jacobson said of her prognosis. “I will probably miss Tuesday’s meet but I don’t know yet.”

Jefferson dropped to third in the 4x200 with an injured Jacobson and all the way to sixth without her in the 4x400.

“Would have run well if Taylor hadn’t pulled her hamstring,” Jefferson Coach Bill Calloway said of the 4x200. “The girls' winter injuries (Jacobson and Rachel Broghammer suffered leg injuries during basketball) has made a difference. Their conditioning is behind.”

Calloway took freshman Lucy Schneekloth out of the open 200 and put her in Jacobson's spot in the 4x400.

“We weren’t satisfied with the 4x400,” he said.

The J-Hawks did have some bright spots as their 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relays looked strong and both took second.

Cedar Rapids Washington got another strong performance from star sprinter and hurdler Brooke Foreman, who came up just short in the 100 meter hurdles and finished second. She easily took the 400 meter hurdles and was also a part of the Warriors 4x100 relay that took first.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy struggled throughout the day but got an impressive win as Capria Davis came out of the first or “slow” heat to win the 400 meter dash.

Cedar Rapids Prairie got an early win in the high jump as Leslie Harder edged Linn-Mar's Sara Strauel by clearing 5-foot on her first try (it took Strauel three tries) and neither could got over the 5-2 mark.

Cedar Falls won the final race to come from behind and beat Iowa City West by half a point for the team title.

Washington, Linn Mar, Prairie, and Jefferson all placed taking third through sixth, respectively. Kennedy took eighth.
