Foreman dedicates regional title to her grandfather

IOWA CITY - Brooke Foreman kissed her right index finger and pointed to the sky Thursday evening after winning the 400 meter hurdles at the Class 4A regional track meet in Iowa City.

It was a gesture of love.

"It's a tribute to my grandpa, who passed away with cancer this year," said Foreman, a junior at Cedar Rapids Washington. "He was given four or five days (to live) over the summer and he lasted 6 1/2 months. Ever since, the 400 hurdle race was dedicated to him."

Edward Foreman was in his late 70's when he died this winter. He was a big fan of his granddaughter.

"Yeah, he was," she said. "He lived in Lombard, Illinois, so he never had the chance to make it to a track meet, but I know he can see me now. And that's why before every race I tell him that I hope he's watching me this time."

Foreman also won the 100 hurdles and ran on the victorious shuttle hurdle relay Thursday, but the 400 hurdles is the special one.

"That race is just for him," she said. "It's my favorite race, and it's the hardest race there is. And I know cancer is really hard to fight, so that race represents the cancer to me."

Foreman has dedicated the 400 hurdles to her grandfather all season, but just recently told her parents, Eric and Mary Foreman, what she was doing.

"I told them at the last meet and my dad almost teared up. He's just really proud," she said. "My mom teared up, though. She was speechless."

Foreman is one of the top track athletes in Iowa. She's broken the Mississippi Valley Conference record in the 400 hurdles and will be aiming for state titles in Des Moines next week.

Taylor Vogel, Alissa Oney and Layloni Beard joined Foreman on the triumphant shuttle hurdle relay team. Foreman and the Warriors placed second in the 4x100 relay and hope to qualify in that event as well.

The Jefferson J-Hawks won the 4x200 relay and sprint medley to automatically qualify for state. Maliya Rattliffe, Summer Carber, Taylor Jacobson and Rachel Broghammer ran both races for Jefferson.

Kennedy captured the 4x400 relay with a strong kick by Jasmine Raue on the anchor leg. Mariah Simmons, Megan Terukina and Capria Davis ran the first three legs for the Cougars.

Iowa City High won the regional title with 188 points. Washington placed third, Kennedy fourth, Prairie fifth, Jefferson sixth and Xavier eighth.

Foreman has 3 top finishes at Drake

DES MOINES -- Alex Carr delivered a message to high school track fans Saturday after Cedar Rapids Washington finished a close third in the 4x100 relay at Drake.

Don't count us out, he announced.

There was a bang-bang-bang finish in the 4x100 on a warm, sunny day in Des Moines. Cedar Falls won the event in 42.23 seconds, West Des Moines Valley finished second in 42.33 and the Warriors placed third in 42.39 in an exciting race.

Carr doesn't like to lose, but he was encouraged by the result. The Warriors had a slight bobble on one of their handoffs, which may have cost them the race.

"We can win it," Carr said. "I've never thought we couldn't win it. The sky's the limit."

Carr was talking specifically about the 4x100, but he also was talking about Washington winning another team championship at the Class 4A state meet May 19-21. The Warriors won the Class 4A championships in 2009 and 2010.

Carr, a senior, is hoping for a three-peat to end his prep sports career, and he thinks his team is headed in the right direction after a promising display at the 102nd Drake Relays.

Will Griffin and Carr tied for second in the 100 meter dash on Friday, then they helped the Warriors contend for top honors in the 4x100 on Saturday.

"I'm proud of us," Carr said. "I see that we're making strides and that we can be right up there with the good teams. We ARE one of the good teams.

"I mean, we're the defending state champs two years in a row. I still feel like we have the bull's-eye on our back, and that's how we have to feel each and every meet."

Alonzo Carr, Griffin and Kristopher Gardner ran the first three legs on the 4x100 relay. Griffin blazed down the backstretch on his leg to set the stage, then Alex Carr battled James Harrington of Cedar Falls and Isaac Lintz of Valley on the anchor leg.

"We were right there," Carr said. "Right there."

Harrington beat Griffin and Carr in the 100, then denied them again in the 4x100.

Metro athletes did not win any titles at Drake on Saturday, but there were some strong performances by runners from Washington, Prairie and Linn-Mar.

Brooke Foreman placed in three events for Washington on a busy day. She helped the Warriors finish third in the shuttle hurdle relay and fourth in the 4x100 relay and placed fourth in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best 63.88 seconds.

Taylor Vogel, Alissa Oney and Layloni Beard joined Foreman on the shuttle hurdle. The Warriors broke the meet record in 64.50 seconds, but Urbandale (63.65) and Waukee (63.83) were faster.

Jazz Royster, Oney and Beard joined forces with Foreman on the 4x100 in 49.41 seconds. Des Moines Roosevelt was the winner in 47.79.

Nick Lucas of Linn-Mar finished third in the 400 hurdles in 53.90 seconds. Nick Efkamp of Madrid won the race in 53.04.

The Lions placed seventh in the 4x400 relay witih Lucas, Aaron Razo, Jordan Kremer and Matt Simon touring the blue oval in 3:27.13. Carolyn Newhouse finished eighth in the 1500 for Linn-Mar in 4:48.24.

Cedar Rapids Prairie took fourth in the 4x800 relay in 7:57.58 with Kyle Stocker, Ryan Smith, Justin Burns and Matt Stocker breaking 8 minutes for the first time this season. Indianola won in 7:52.42.

Kyle Stocker came back later and finished fifth in the 1600 run in 4:20.53. Alec Baldwin of Spirit Lake Park was the winner in 4:14.76.

Foreman takes a break, still nabs a pair of wins

Just three days after Brooke Foreman placed in three events in the Drake Relays, she was back at it with Washington at the Prairie Relays on Tuesday.

Foreman ran well again, although she didn’t run her usual slate of races.

"After Drake, I am very tired so my coach just wanted to put me in some 100's to see if I could get my time down,” Foreman said.

Foreman picked up two victories, one in the 100 meter dash and one in the 100 hurdles. She also helped the 4x100 relay team to a second place finish.

Last season Foreman placed seventh in the state in the 100 meter dash, but this year, she hasn’t run it much, focusing instead on hurdles.

"My time hasn't been where I've wanted it to be, but I have found other races that I can be much better at this season," she said.

In the 100 meter race at the Prairie Relays, Foreman was credited with the win, running a 12.53, .02 seconds faster than teammate Kadejah Sanders, though Foreman is fairly sure Sanders edged her out in the end.

“I haven't run the 100 since early in the season,” Foreman said. “I got out well, but I think my teammate caught me at the end, Kadejah, but they announced me as first so I was a little confused."

There was no doubt about who won the 100 meter hurdles, however, as Foreman pulled away from the field with a time of 15.25, a full 1.03 seconds ahead of the next closest runner. Despite the sizeable win, Foreman was less than pleased with her time. She missed fellow Warrior Layloni Beard, who did not run Tuesday, pushing her across the finish line.

“There was nothing really there to push me,” she said. “I like dropping time because I'm thinking about running that race at state. I guess after Drake it wasn't that bad to have a little bit of a break."

After the Drake Relays, Foreman didn’t run in her best race, the 400 meter hurdles, though she was excited about how she ran the race at Drake over the weekend.

"I clipped the last hurdle, but I was still really close to getting third, and I dropped an entire second off my PR, so I was really proud of that,” She said. “Now I am down to 1:03."

Washington finished second overall with 124.5 points, 16 points behind Iowa City West. Linn-Mar (88 points) and Prairie (85.5 points) came in third and fourth. Xavier finished sixth with 47.5 points.

"This meet is just kind of a workout for us, we aren't trying to go out and give it our all,” Foreman said. “We always try to win, but we are looking to do really well on Friday. We have a really tough division but hopefully we will pull it out."

The Warriors and Linn-Mar are running in the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division meet at Loras College in Dubuque on Friday. Prairie and Xavier will compete in the MVC Valley meet Friday at Cedar Falls.
