No. 9 Cougars sweep past Warriors

Madison Palmer collected 28 assists Tuesday night as the ninth-ranked Kennedy Cougars swept Washington, 25-12, 25-12, 25-12, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Washington.

Paige Frank had 11 kills for the Cougars. Emma Boote finished with 10 kills and four aces.

Kennedy raised its record to 27-9 overall. Washington fell to 3-30.

Prairie cruises to own volleyball title

The fifth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie volleyball team sailed to the championship of the 6th Annual Michelle Starcevich Invitational Saturday with five straight victories in the Prairie gym.

The Hawks won all five of their matches in straight sets, including a 21-16, 21-12 conquest of 11th-ranked Ankeny. The Hawks also swept Muscatine (21-10, 21-11), Mediapolis (21-15, 21-11), Washington (21-11, 21-13) and Clear-Creek Amana (21-10, 21-13).

The Washington Warriors finished the tournament with a 1-4 record. The Warriors topped Muscatine, 21-13, 21-17.

Team Standings

1. Prairie 5-0, 2. Ankeny 4-1, 3. Clear Creek-Amana 3-2, 4. Mediapolis 2-3, 5. Washington 1-4, 6. Muscatine 0-5.

Saints sweep Warriors in volleyball

Jess Callahan collected 40 assists Tuesday night as the Xavier Saints swept Washington, 25-13, 25-19, 25-21, in a Mississippi Valley Conference volleyball match at Washington.

Charlotte Richards contributed 14 kills for the Saints. Ellie McDermott had 11 kills and five aces. Lexi Noonan contributed nine kills.

Callahan had eight digs and Anna Parr had seven.

Prairie volleyball team falls twice

CEDAR FALLS - The Prairie volleyball team ran into tough competition from smaller schools Saturday and finished with a 2-2 record at the Cedar Falls Invitational.

Prairie, which is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, lost to Charles City in its first match in pool play. Charles City is ranked No. 7 in Class 4A.

The Hawks rebounded in pool play with victories against Fort Dodge and Janesville. The Hawks rallied for a 2-1 victory against Janesville, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A.

Prairie advanced to the championship bracket and lost in the quarterfinals to Dike-New Hartford, 21-7, 20-22, 15-12. Dike-New Hartford, which is ranked No. 6 in Class 2A, topped Marshalltown for the title in straight sets.

The Washington Warriors finished with a 1-3 record in the tournament. The Warriors topped Aplington-Parkersburg and lost to Cedar Falls, Grundy Center and Waterloo West.

Warriors blanked at IC West volleyball

IOWA CITY - The Cedar Rapids Washington girls volleyball team lost all four of its matches Saturday at the Caroline Found Extravaganza at Iowa City West.

The Warriors lost to Mount Vernon (21-3, 21-18), Pella Christian (21-14, 21-11) and Dowling (21-6, 21-7) in pool play. The Warriors lost to Wahlert (25-17, 25-14) in the consolation semifinals.

Dowling defeated Iowa City West for the title, 26-24, 25-17.
