No. 7 Saints rally by No. 8 Solon

SOLON - Bryce Schulte threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Nick Stark in the final minutes of the game Friday night as No. 7 Xavier nipped No. 8 Solon, 22-19, in a Class 3A district game at Spartan Stadium.

Solon led 19-7 in the fourth quarter, but the Saints got within 19-14 on a 12-yard touchdown run by Maliki Wilson and the PAT with 9:47 left to play, capping an 85-yard drive.

The Saints got the ball at their own 7-yard line with 3:13 left in the ballgame and promptly drove 93 yards for the winning touchdown. They used a trick play to gain 35 valuable yards when Schulte threw a lateral to Nolan Butkowski, who passed to Blake Whitten for the big gain.

Xavier (2-0) added a two-point conversion after the 58-yard TD pass from Schulte to Stark for a 22-19 lead. Solon drove into Xavier territory, but Caleb Billick intercepted a pass and the Saints ran out the clock.

Saints beat Assumption in opener

The Xavier Saints had to wait an extra week to play their first football game this season, but it was worth it.

Xavier forced five turnovers Friday night and trimmed Davenport Assumption, 14-7, in a Class 3A non-district game at Saints Field.

The Saints were supposed to open the season last week, but a thunderstorm wiped out their game against Dowling Catholic and kept them chomping at the bit for another seven days.

The Saints intercepted three passes and recovered two fumbles in the victory.

Assumption (1-1) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 7-yard run by Joe Argo, but the Saints kept the Knights off the board the rest of the game.

"Our kids eventually settled down after the first series of plays," Xavier coach Duane Schulte said. "You could tell they played a game and we hadn't. We did get used to their speed."

Xavier cancels game; 3 others postponed

None of the high school football games that were scheduled for the Metro area were played Friday night due to the heavy thunderstorms and lightning that passed through the area.

Xavier High School canceled its home game against Dowling Catholic. The game will not be rescheduled. Dowling is unable to make another round trip from West Des Moines on Saturday for a possible makeup date.

The other three games in the Metro area were postponed until Saturday.

Washington will face Jefferson at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingston Stadium.

Prairie will play Linn-Mar at 5 p.m. Saturday at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Marion will host Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. Saturday at Thomas Park.

Schulte poised for next step at Xavier

Bryce Schulte played a little game of catch with his old brother Reggie this summer, but this wasn't like the football games they used to play in the backyard at their home.

This game took place at the University of Northern Iowa, where Reggie Schulte is one of the quarterbacks for the Panthers. Just for fun, they invited Sawyer Kollmorgen, who is UNI's starting quarterback, and they also invited Rashadeem Gray, who is one of UNI's receivers and Reggie Schulte's roommate.

It was quite an experience for Bryce Schulte, a junior at Xavier High School who is getting ready for his second year as the Saints' starting quarterback.

Bryce loved hanging out with his older brother in Cedar Falls.

"It was awesome," he said Monday during a break in practice at Xavier. "He taught me so many things I didn't think about before I went up there. He helped me a lot with my technique and my release and stuff. It was phenomenal."

Reggie Schulte smashed all the passing records during his all-state career at Xavier and is entering his third year at Northern Iowa, hoping to climb the depth chart. Bryce Schulte accounted for 26 touchdowns for the Saints last season as a sophomore - 14 passing and 12 rushing - and is looking for even better things this year after helping Xavier reach the semifinals of the Class 3A playoffs.
