Saints beat Wahlert in OT; advance to title game

DES MOINES - The top-seeded Xavier boys soccer team squeaked by Mississippi Valley Conference rival Dubuque Wahlert, 1-0, in overtime Friday in the semifinals of the state tournament at Cownie Soccer Complex.

Xavier (16-2-1) plays No. 6 seed Norwalk (12-7) for the state championship Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Cownie. Norwalk beat seventh-seeded Spirit Lake Park-Okoboji, 2-1, Friday.

The Saints beat Norwalk, 2-1, in the first round of last year's state tournament on their way to winning the state championship.

Much of the game against Wahlert (10-10-1) was a battle for possession in the middle of the field. The Saints finally broke through in the sixth minute of overtime when Josh Steffensmeier found Logan Bouchette in space on the right side of the field.

“I just saw Josh with the ball and a big space on the side,” Bouchette said. “I called for it, ran down, and got a good cross in.”

The cross went all the way across the face of the goal and found senior Chris Kapfer, who was making a run to the far side post. He hammered in the golden goal, ending the game.

“I saw him cross it in and I figured I’ve got to get this to finish it,” Kapfer said.

The game was the latest installment of numerous close games that the two MVC schools have shared in recent years.  The Saints and the Golden Eagles play each other every regular season, and often meet in the postseason, so the two teams are very familiar with one another. The fact that this game was a defensive struggle was not all that surprising.

“They play with two fullbacks and then a deep sweeper that takes away all the long balls, so it is really hard to exploit them through the sides. But once you do then they just open up,” Bouchette said.

The Saints edged Wahlert in a similar defensive battle earlier this season taking home a 1-0 victory in penalty kicks. They also played each other in last year's state championship, won by Xavier, 2-0.

“We know each other so well, it was down to the last little detail,” Xavier Coach Amir Hadzic said. “We know each other, we match so well, it is like a chess game.”

The two schools also always seem to get fired up to play one another.

“It’s always a tough game, no matter where it is at, they always come to play hard, especially against us since it’s a Catholic school rivalry,” junior Logan Bouchette said.

Xavier used more substitutions than Wahlert in the game and Hadzic thought that played a big role as the game went on and with the temperatures in the 90s.

“You could see that some kids were cramping and the defense was not as sharp as it was in the beginning so it was just a matter of time that one of the defenses would collapse,” Bouchette said.

Injury report

The Saints have been bit by the injury bug hard at the end of the season.

Sophomore Alex Hagg left Friday's game with an injured wrist and was on the way to the hospital to get x-rays to see if it was broken after the game. Hadzic said he is questionable for the Norwalk game.

Sophomore Colin Gunn also left the game in the second half with a banged up knee, although Hadzic said that he was feeling better after the game and hoped to play Saturday.

The Saints already were without starting defender Braxton Chicchelly who suffered a concussion in the first round game against Clear Creek Amana on Thursday and Valley Division boys soccer athlete of the year and team captain Zach Smith, who has been sidelined during the postseason with a knee injury.

“It’s a little hospital here, but you know, we have been through adversity all year and we have a deep roster,” Hadzic said. “There are some other guys that are waiting to step up and play well for us.”

Practice makes perfect for Saints

DES MOINES - The Xavier boys soccer team used a little bit of creativity to overcome Clear Creek Amana, 2-0, in its first round matchup at the state tournament at the Cownie Soccer Complex on Thursday.

With a 1-0 lead early in the second half, the Saints (15-2-1) got a free kick from just outside of the box after a penalty on the Clippers (11-5). They decided to go with a set piece that they had developed at practice during the week.

The play, engineered by junior Chad Gilmer and senior Tim Bouchard, had Bouchard fake a kick and run past the ball and around the Clippers’ wall. Gilmer then ran up on it and tapped the ball over to Bouchard who received behind the defense and beat the keeper going to the opposite post.

“We worked on it all week,” Xavier Coach Amir Hadzic said. “At first the players suggested it, and I thought at first it might be naive a little bit, but after we worked it a couple times we perfected it. There is nothing better than when you work something in practice and it actually goes the way it is supposed to.”

That goal gave the Saints a 2-0 lead and all but put the game out of reach. The suffocating Xavier defense kept the Clippers from mounting any serious scoring threats.

The top-seeded Saints are the defending state champions. They played a tough Clear Creek Amana squad that had not been to the state tournament before, but the game looked fairly even through the opening few minutes.

“The first 10 minutes it was a battle,” Bouchard said. “This was their first time coming to state, they were hyped up, we were hyped up, so it took a little bit to get the jitters out. But we kind of regained our touch.”

As the Saints regained their touch, they started to take over the game, monopolizing the scoring chances and playing tough defense.

The Saints broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute when Gilmer dribbled across the top of the box and drew the defense before he dropped it off to sophomore Colin Gunn who shot a hard ball on the ground and into the side netting.

Xavier has a lot of players with state tournament experience on its roster after winning all three games in Des Moines last season, but the Saints were still waiting to see who would show up this time around. They got a big boost from their talented sophomore class.

“It is not the best game we have ever played but it is state, it’s always something else,” Hadzic said. “People choke up a little bit and you see who is ready to go and who is not. Our sophomore group that came actually stabilized our game and were big contributors.”

The Saints move on to face fifth-seeded Dubuque Wahlert in Friday's semifinals at 2:30 p.m. It is a rematch of last year’s 2A state championship game won by the Saints, 2-0. Xavier also beat its Mississippi valley Conference foe in the regular season with a 1-0 victory in penalty kicks on April 28 in Dubuque.

“It’s going to be a war, it’s going to be a battle,” Bouchard said. “Every time we play Wahlert it is a battle. Last year in state it was a battle, this year up in Dubuque it was a battle and went to PKs.”

The Saints will be without captain Zach Smith, who was on the sidelines in civilian clothes after he injured his right leg against Iowa City West in the regular season finale. The
Saints were hoping that he would be back for the state tournament, but he couldn’t get healthy in time.

“We just heard the news before state that he will not be able to play,” Hadzic said. “It’s really hard for me to see a player that makes such an impact, a senior who carries this team all season long, not being able to participate. But he is part of the team, he is cheering on his teammates and we have a chip on our shoulder wanting to win for him.”

Saints sideline Marion in substate final

Four different Saints scored goals and No. 1 Xavier downed Marion, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in a Class 2A boys soccer substate final at Xavier.

Defending state champion Xavier (14-2-1) advances to the state tournament as the top seed. The Saints will play eighth-seeded Clear Creek Amana (12-4) in Thursday's quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m. at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.

Chris Kapfer and Tim Bouchard scored goals about five minutes apart in the first half to stake Xavier to a 2-0 lead. Chad Gilmer and Michael Tessmer added goals in the second half.

The Saints played without senior Zach Smith, who is out for the season because of a knee injury. Smith led the Saints in scoring and assists during the regular season with 12 and 10, respectively. He was named the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division boys soccer athlete of the year earlier Saturday.

Marion closed out one of the most successful boys soccer seasons in school history at 13-3.

Quick score sends Saints to substate final

Blustering winds and sloppy field conditions at Heco Field last night did not deter the Cedar Rapids Xavier boys soccer team from putting the ball in the net.

Quick scoring paired with a stiff defensive effort propelled the Saints past DeWitt Central 5-0 in a Class 2A substate semifinal last night at Xavier.

Xavier hosts Marion in the substate final Saturday at 12 p.m. Marion beat Mount Vernon, 3-0, Wednesday. The winner of that game advances to the state tournament, June 2-4 at Des Moines. Xavier is the defending state champion.

The Saints got the goals coming early when Logan Buschette connected only 2 minutes into the game. Xavier never looked back, getting goals from Luke Neuhaus, Chris Kapfer, and two from top scorer Chad Gilmer.

When they weren’t scoring, the Saints were busy stopping Dewitt Central’s offense. Allowing only three shots on goal in the first half, Xavier dominated the ball throughout the game.

Xavier Coach Amir Hadzic said there is room for improvement, but was generally pleased with his team’s effort.

“I am not crediting our defense as much as them playing defensively, but this defense has played together all season long," he said. "We have had shutouts against MVC teams and I am confident we can go to the substate final and continue to have success.”

Important substate games and the state tournament are familiar to many players on Xavier’s team, and Hadzic wasn’t surprised that they came ready play. “The experience really helps. Many of our players have played on a big stage and it is no surprise they rise to the occasion.”

While happy to come out with the win, Hadzic mentioned that there are certain areas his team should clean up before the substate final.

“Sometimes we were trying to do too much," he said. "We just need to be more dangerous offensively and improve our passing. But we have two days to work so hopefully we will be ready for Saturday.”

Xavier - Boys Soccer

Late goal drops Xavier into title share with West

The defending 3A and 2A boys soccer state champions faced off Tuesday.

The stakes weren't quite as high as a state championship, but a Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division title was on the line when Iowa City West visited Xavier.

Xavier (12-2-1, 11-2 MVC) came into the game with a one-game lead on Iowa City West (13-4, 11-2 MVC) and the Saints looked to have the upper hand coming down the stretch. But a goal in the 75th minute sunk the Saints and lifted Iowa City West to a 1-0 victory and into a share of the division title.

The goal came less than a minute after Iowa City West forward Alex Troester got his second yellow card, forcing the Trojans to play a man down.

With the Saints attacking off of a free kick, the ball found its way to the feet of Xavier senior Michael Tessmer with the Trojan keeper out of position. Tessmer turned and fired at the goal, but an Iowa City West defender blocked it at the goal line.

That play would have been disappointing on its own, but the Trojans got control of the ball and got off to a quick counter attack, getting the ball to Paris Martins who made a run from about 50 yards out. Martins beat his defender and the keeper for the goal.

“That is why soccer is the cruelest sport in the world,” Xavier Coach Amir Hadzic said. “You miss a 100 percent chance wide open goal, the next thing you know, 10 seconds later, the other team scores. It’s not like in basketball where you can do it back and forth, it is kind of a dagger.”

Despite the tough loss, Hadzic said he was proud of how his team played against what he called one of the hottest teams in the state. The win was West's ninth straight.

Hadzic said he is confident the Saints will bounce back strong in the postseason.

“I don’t think this will derail us, we know what our goal is,” Hadzic said. “These kids are resilient and they really like to compete. I don’t see a reason why this unfortunate loss would affect us in the post season.”

It was also senior night for the Saints, who will graduate 12 players. Hadzic said he is very proud of this year’s group of seniors.

“Last year we had three all-staters that left and everybody doubted what we could do as a team this season,” Hadzic said. “They just kind of stepped up in a leadership position and carried this team to a conference title which for our school is always kind of a goal, but it is difficult to accomplish because there are so many good teams.”

Xavier is looking forward to getting back sophomore forward Isaac Frisch, who scored two goals in last season's championship game. Frisch has been injured much of this season, but Hadzic said he is starting to work out and could be ready in time for the Saints' substate semifinal matchup against either DeWitt Central or Anamosa on May 25 at Xavier.
