Xavier Girls Soccer

Xavier - Girls Soccer

Dale’s hat trick lifts Saints to title tilt

MUSCATINE - For the eighth year in a row, the Xavier girls soccer team is marching into the state championship game. For the sixth straight year, they will be trying to win it all.

The top-ranked Saints will play Waukee for the Class 2A title Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Muscatine Soccer Complex. They advanced by beating No. 5 Glenwood, 4-0, in Friday's semifinals. Second-ranked Waukee (15-3) beat Pleasant Valley, 2-1, in Friday's other semifinal.

Xavier (18-2) was missing leading scorer Kayla Armstrong, who received a red card in the first round against Independence-East Buchanan. Her fellow forward, junior Annie Dale, stepped up to make up for the lost scoring punch, netting three goals against a Glenwood defense that had only given up three goals all season.

“We knew that someone had to step up because Kayla was out, so my teammates played me some good balls and I just had to finish them,” Dale said.

Xavier Coach Doug Graham said Dale has been doing that for the Saints all season long.

“Annie always is the kind of player that, when you need her, she will be there,” Graham said. “That’s the difference, in my opinion, between good players and great players. She plays well under pressure and when we need her she comes through every single time. I’m so impressed by that girl.”

Nicole Noonan scored the other goal for the Saints, whose four goals all came in the first 45 minutes. There were mass substitutions for much of the second half.

The Saints have been on a tear throughout the postseason, outscoring their opponents 20-0 on their way through regional and state to get to the championship game.

“Come state tournament we have really started connecting well,” said junior Mary Levett. “We just have really great chemistry on the field and everyone has been talking more, which helps. When we settle down and play, two-touch soccer we call it, things seem to go really well.”

Despite its recent streak, Xavier expects to be in a fight for the state title against Waukee.

“Both of those teams are very, very good teams and it is going to be a very tough game, no matter what tomorrow,” Graham said before the other semifinal game had ended.

All three of Waukee's losses came against teams in the Class 3A semifinals (West Des Moines Valley, Iowa City West and Ankeny). The Warriors are led by a strong defense which has tallied 13 shutouts.

Xavier's two losses were to Class 3A state tournament qualifiers Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Washington.

The Saints are shooting for their sixth straight state championship and Dale said that there is a little bit more pressure knowing that the program has won so many in a row.

“We just have to ignore that fact and just pretend that we’ve never been there,” she said. “We’ve just got to play hard.”

Xavier advances without top scorer

The top-ranked Xavier girls soccer team fought through the rain and 10th-ranked Independence East Buchanan in their quest for a sixth straight state championship. The Saints won, 4-0, in Thursday's first round of the Class 2A tournament at the Muscatine Soccer Complex.

Now the question for Xavier (17-2) is can it survive the loss of its leading scorer when it faces No. 5 Glenwood (15-1) at 4 p.m. Friday in the semifinals? Kayla Armstrong has 35 goals, but won't be able to play because of a red card she received with 8:22 left in Thursday's game after getting in a tussle with an Independence player.

“A couple plays prior to that she got hit slightly in the back and then there was a little altercation that the ref didn’t see,” Coach Doug Graham said. “Then when the next contact came, Kayla Armstrong responded and was correctly ejected from the game. You cannot do that.”

According to high school state rules, a player must sit out one day’s worth of competition after receiving a red card The Saints will have to find a way to replace Armstrong.

“It will be really difficult, we have never had this happen before, especially at state,” said junior forward Annie Dale. “We are just going to have to adjust to what happened, we can’t take anything back now so we just have to move forward and try to be strong.”

Graham, however, said he is not worried about how the team will respond to losing their leading scorer for a game.

“We have plenty of depth and we can change things around at will,” he said. “Although it is frustrating for me why it happened, and justifiably so, it doesn’t frustrate me. What we are going to do (is) make the adjustments.”

The game was a bit of a sloppy affair, especially in the first half with the rain coming down hard for the entire period.

“The first half was extra rainy, it was kind of hard,” Dale said. “The ball was slippery, everyone was kind of all over the place, had a lot of kick-ball, but we can’t really do anything about the weather so we just have to adjust to it.”

The Saints adjusted quickly, however, putting lots of pressure on the Independence goal and breaking the through with a goal in the 12th minute. Megan Konchar fed the ball to Dale, who was able to knock it around a diving keeper and beat the defender, who was dropping back in a last ditch effort to keep the ball out of goal.

Although the Xavier offense continued to roll and create many good scoring chances, Independence keeper Katelynn Miller came up huge for the Mustangs (15-3) and managed to keep Xavier out of goal for the next 65 minutes.

“She did great,” Graham said. “She made at least three great saves, one especially in the second half. I have great respect for her, she did great.”

Armstrong was finally able to give the Saints a bit of a cushion when she made a run to the backside post and put in a beautiful cross from freshman Marisa Berutti.

Just three minutes later, Armstrong got sent off. Although the Saints were playing a man down after that, they still controlled possession and put in two quick goals shortly after the ejection for the final 4-0 margin.

“With Kayla going out, I think we just realized, ‘Wow, we have to pick it up,’ ” Dale said. “She is a great offensive player so we have to all pick up for what she did out there. So we just went off on a little streak there.”

Saints will go marching for 6th title in row

The Xavier girls soccer earned another trip to the state tournament on Monday, but the Prairie Hawks made them sweat it out.

The top-ranked Saints prevailed, 1-0, in the Class 2A regional finals in sweltering heat at Xavier and will bid for their sixth state title in a row this week in Muscatine.

Xavier (16-2) will face Independence/East Buchanan (15-2) in the opening round of the Class 2A state tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Muscatine soccer complex.

The Saints defeated the Prairie Hawks, 6-2, during the regular season, but Prairie goalkeeper Emily Musil played a superb game Monday and gave her team a chance to pull an upset.

"It was the best game she's ever played," Prairie Coach Cara Solness remarked.

Musil made a series of diving, sliding, fingertip grabs to keep the Saints off the scoreboard at Heco Field in the first half, and she nearly pitched a shutout for the entire game except for one bruising play early in the second half.

Musil tried to make an aggresive play for a loose ball in front of her goal, but she collided with a Xavier player and Annie Dale was able to score into an empty net with 31 minutes, 34 seconds to play. Sammi Shepard got credit for the assist.

"I got hit in the head," Musil said. "I think it was her shinpad. I blacked out for a few seconds."

When Musil regained her senses, the Saints had their 1-0 lead.

Musil said she got hit three times in the face or head during the match. She was looking forward to going home and relaxing, knowing her team gave a good effort.

Xavier dominated the match and had numerous chances to score, but Musil kept turning the Saints away. Prairie mounted an attack late in the game and had two good chances, but one shot flew over the goal and the other slid past the goal mouth.

The Saints have won five straight state titles and six overall, but all those were in Class 1A (the smallest class by enrollment). The IGHSAU added another class for girls soccer this year and now the Saints are in Class 2A (the middle class).

Xavier Coach Doug Graham anticipates stiffer competition at the state tournament this year against bigger schools.
