Saints reach 1A substate finals before falling

WATERLOO - The Xavier boys tennis team reached the finals of the Class 1A substate tournament Saturday before running into a talented team from Davenport Assumption.

The Saints clipped Waterloo Columbus, 5-1, in the substate semifinals Saturday morning with Kyle D'Mello, Grant Hunt, Mitch Steffensmeier, Bill Young and Ben Curley all winning their singles matches.

The Saints were then blanked by Davenport Assumption, 5-0.

Xavier netters trim Wahlert in tourney

DUBUQUE - The Xavier Saints nipped Dubuque Wahlert, 5-4, in the Class 1A postseasonteam tennis tournament Saturday in Dubuque.

Noah Schmall, Mitch Steffensmeier and Bill Young gave Xavier a 3-3 split in the singles matches. The Saints won the meet by winning two doubles matches.

Xavier advances to play Waterloo Columbus in the substate semifinals next Saturday morning at Columbus. The regional final is Saturday afternoon at Columbus.

Noah Schmall wins district singles title

CAMANCHE -- Xavier's Noah Schmall beat Davenport Assumption's Jimmy Huiskamp in straight sets and won the singles title Thursday at the boys Class 1A district tennis tournament.

Schmall only lost two sets in winning three matches and claiming the title. He beat Dubuque Wahlert's Quinn Meyer, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and Assumption's Mikey Corsiglia, 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. He drubbed Huiskamp, 6-1, 6-0, in the championship.

Xavier finished third in the district meet to qualify for a preliminary round meet in the state team tounament. The Saints play at second-place Wahlert on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the substate tournament. First-place Assumption also qualified for the substate tourney.

Marion also was in the district. The Indians' doubles team of Brandon Hornback and Michael Anderson finished fourth.

The top two in each event qualify for the Class 1A state meet May 25-26 at Byrnes Park in Waterloo.

Xavier boys net victory against J-Hawks

Noah Schmall, Kyle D'Mello, Grant Hunt, Mitch Steffensmeier and Ben Curley won their singles matches Tuesday as Xavier defeated Jefferson, 7-2, in a Mississippi Valley Conference tennis meet at the Xavier courts.

Schmall clipped Jacob Donald, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.
