Xavier Boys Track

Xavier - Boys Track

Clasen wins high jump at Linn-Mar

Kyle Dunn is sorry. And he's back, as good as ever.

Dunn returned from a three-meet suspension Tuesday and starred at the Linn-Mar Relays with strong performances in his signature events on a chilly night.

He won the 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles with excellent times, then anchored Linn-Mar's 4x400 relay to victory with a 48.5 second split to finish the night in style.

Dunn, a senior at Linn-Mar and one of the top track athletes in the state, was arrested at 1:57 a.m. on Saturday, April 16 and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to maintain control.

He was suspended for 20 percent of the season, according to school rules, and was not allowed to compete in the prestigious Drake Relays, where he was the defending champion in both hurdles events. Dunn sat in the stands at Drake last week as a spectator, unable to participate and defend his titles.

"It was pretty tough," he said. "Just hearing the announcer call 'Linn-Mar' and knowing I should be out there, it was was really tough. I don't want to experience that ever again."

Dunn expressed remorse for setting a bad example and disappointing the Linn-Mar community, especially younger kids.

"I understand they're probably looking at me and they lost most, if not all, of their respect for me," he said. "But I want everyone to know I'm going to work my butt off to get that back and show everyone that I really care about them and I care about the sport.

"I have a whole new view of racing. A whole new appreciation, really," he said.

Dunn attributed his arrest to a temporary lapse of judgment.

"The last couple of weeks have definitely been a time for me to mature and work my way back," he said. "Retrospect is always 20-20, but I've got to look back on my mistakes and learn from them."

Dunn practiced with Linn-Mar during his suspension and was in excellent form Tuesday. He won the 110 high hurdles in 14.39 seconds, just a tad behind the 14.32 he ran earlier this season, then blazed through the 400 low hurdles in 51.59, by far the best time in the state this year.

"He's been practicing hard. He's been focusing. And he's determined," Linn-Mar Coach Ken Hopkins remarked.

Dunn has won five major titles during his prep career - three at the state meet and two at the Drake Relays. He forfeited his chance for more glory at Drake this year, but sounds determined to have a strong finish at the Class 4A state meet in Des Moines May 19-21.

"I have to show everyone that I can still run and that I have a strong character," he said.

Dunn has signed with the University of Arkansas, and Arkansas Coach Chris Bucknam has said Dunn's suspension will not affect his status with the Razorbacks.

Dunn won the 400 hurdles at state last year in 51.41 seconds, so his 51.59 Tuesday was just a tick slower. He had been leading the state in the event this year at 52.43 seconds, so he clipped nearly a second off that pace on the new Linn-Mar track.

"I'm feeling right where I need to be," he said. "That race tonight was pretty encouraging about my fitness level."

Linn-Mar cruised to the championship of its own Clark Weaver Relays with 167 points with Dunn leading the way. Cedar Rapids Washington placed second in the six-team meet with 125 points. Xavier finished fourth and Prairie was fifth.

Linn-Mar got victories from Jack Halupnik in the shot put (46-10 1/2), Josh Evans in the 3200 (9:40.06) and Matt Simon in the 800 (2:00.15). The Lions also won the 4x800 relay, shuttle hurdle relay and distance medley.

Will Griffin and Alex Carr finished 1-2 in the 200 meter dash for Washington in 22.43 and 22.54 seconds, respectively. Robert Hogg won the 1600 for the Warriors in 4:29.86 and Washington won the 4x100 relay in 43.14.

Xavier collected victories from Alec Clasen in the high jump (6-4) and Jordan Weber in the 400 (52.44).

Prairie senior Sam Joens, fresh off his victory at the Drake Relays, won the discus with a toss of 161 feet, 4 inches.

Xavier - Boys Track

Saints boys 4th at Valley track meet

Kyle Stocker swept the distance events at the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division boys track meet at Xavier on Friday, winning the 3200 meter (9:41.49), 1600 meter (4:29.04) and 800 meter (2:01.43) races.

“Of course three gold medals is great, but we were just shooting for team points, me and my brother (Matt) just working together one-two,” Stocker said. “It doesn’t really matter who wins.”

Matt Stocker also ran well, taking second behind his brother in the 3200 meter race and finishing third in the 1600 and 800 meter races.

“For the 2 mile, we just took it out slow and then kicked at the end,” Kyle Stocker said. "That was my brother's and my strategy, so we don’t wear ourselves out. The mile, we went really slow and it was a kick race at the end, which Matt and I thought would be to our advantage. The 800 was just all out, give it your all. Tomorrow is going to be easy running anyway.”

Despite winning three races, Stocker was humble in victory, insisting that he was just trying to score as many points as possible for his team.

“It is kind of good I guess,” he said. “It is always your goal to win a race, that’s why we race. At Prairie you are expected to, nothing less.”

The Stocker brothers' finishes in the distance races helped to lead Prairie to third place with 120 points. Cedar Falls won theteam  race with 145 points and Iowa City West came in second with 127 points. Xavier was fourth with 67 points and Jefferson fifth with 51 points.

Prairie also won the discus and the 400 hurdles. Sam Joens made a throw of 157 feet, 4 inches, more than 10 feet further than second place, to take home the discus title. Tom Frieden edged out Charlie Rogers of Iowa City West, to take the 400 hurdles crown by .21 seconds with a time of 56.85
seconds.

Xavier won the 4x200 relay with Nick Ball, Eric Zenisek, Jordan Weber and Eric Hovda circling the track twice in 1:30.79, about 0.8 seconds better than their previous best time.

“After competing at Drake, we knew that we had a pretty good time but we could have done better,” Ball said. “So all week we have been working on handoffs. Getting out as quickly as we can, and just making everything as good as we possibly can. We just put it all together in that race and we had an amazing race, we all ran very well.”

The Saints also picked up a victory in the high jump where Alec Clasen won easily, jumping 6-6, half a foot higher than second place.

Valentine hurdles to Wilkinson win

The Linn-Mar Lions staked their claim as the best boys track team in the Metro area Friday night, and they did it with superstar Kyle Dunn on the sidelines.

The Lions captured the 25th Annual Wilkinson Relays in a meet that featured all seven Metro schools, including the 2009 and 2010 state champion Washington Warriors.

Linn-Mar rolled up 113 points to clip Des Moines Hoover, the runnerup, by 21 points. Washington finished third with 90 points in the 10-team field at Kingston Stadium.

It was an impressive showing by the Lions, especially with Dunn sidelined with a nagging hamstring problem. Dunn is the defending state champion in the 400 meter dash and the 400 low hurdles, but he skipped the Wilkinson Relays on a chilly night.

"We've got to be careful with Kyle Dunn," Linn-Mar Coach Ken Hopkins remarked. "He's hurting a little bit with the hamstring. It's going to be hit-and-miss with him for a while until he gets that thing taken care of."

Dunn skipped the Ask Relays last Friday night, but he competed in the Hollingsworth Relays at Iowa City West Tuesday night and won the 400 hurdles. He also anchored the 4x400 relay to victory that night, but was sore the next day.

Nick Lucas, Josh Evans and Nick Gentzler won individual titles for the Lions Friday night. Linn-Mar also won the 4x800 relay and demonstrated good team depth.

"I think the whole team came together tonight," Hopkins said. "They're coming along, slowly but surely, but tonight is a breakthrough, I think. There were really a lot of bright spots."

Hopkins thinks the Lions can challenge for the state title this year, if the team keeps improving.

"We have a lot of things that need to come together at the end of the season to do that," he said. "Everybody pulled together as a team tonight. That's what it took."

Linn-Mar placed fourth in the team standings at the state meet last year behind Washington, Indianola and Pleasant Valley. Even though the Lions beat Washington Friday night, Hopkins said he thinks the Warriors could be dangerous again this year.

"Some people didn't think they were going to do it last year (win the state title), and they did it," he noted.

Lucas claimed the 400-meter dash in 50.52 seconds, winning the event in Dunn's absence. Evans, a freshman who won the 3200 at the Hollingsworth Relays Tuesday, captured the 1600 Friday in 4:32.14. Gentzler claimed the 800 in 2:03.23.

Chase Grabau, Gentzler, Duggan Trenary and Aaron Razo won the 4x800 relay in 8:14.83.

Washington got victories from Will Griffin in the 100-meter dash (11.17 seconds) and Robert Hogg in the long jump (20-11). The Warriors also won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:00.70 with Drake Hickok, Adam Sailor, Forest Vega and Antonio Johnson.

Sam Joens of Prairie crushed his competition in the discus with a throw of 161 feet, 9 1/2 inches, winning the event by more than 22 feet. The Hawks claimed the sprint medley in 3:37.89 with Austin Dellamuth, Tristan Beyer, Matt Stocker and Kyle Stocker.

Jacob Losch of Kennedy won the 400 hurdles in 56.74 seconds. Caleb Mere, one of the top long jumpers in the state, did not jump Friday due to a lingering hamstring problem.

Carter Valentine of Xavier won the 110 hurdles in 15.25 seconds.
