5 Metro players earn IHSBCA honors

Five Metro players were named to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association all-state teams Wednesday.

Linn-Mar senior pitcher Austin Stroschein and Prairie senior shortstop Ty Mougin were named to the Class 4A first team.

Prairie senior pitcher Brennan Hammer, Linn-Mar senior first baseman Jimmy Roth and Linn-Mar sophomore third baseman Brandt Ollinger were named to the Class 4A second team.

5 Metro players make all-state baseball

Five players from Metro area high schools have been named to the Class 4A all-state baseball teams, the Iowa Newspaper Association announced Tuesday.

Austin Stroschein of Linn-Mar, Brandt Ollinger of Linn-Mar and Ty Mougin of Prairie were named second team all-state by the INA.

Jimmy Roth of Linn-Mar and Zach Brown of Xavier were named third team all-state.

Lombardi faces 4 charges at hearing

Former Cedar Rapids Washington coach Tony Lombardi has been formally charged with four counts of violating rules that govern the ethical conduct of teachers.

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has found "probable cause" of a violation of Board rules and has scheduled a hearing for Sept. 23-24 in Des Moines before Administrative Law Judge John Priester, who will be acting on behalf of the BoEE.

Lombardi could have his teaching license revoked, depending on how the case is resolved.

Lombardi has resigned as the football coach and baseball coach at Washington High School but has a contract to teach in the Cedar Rapids Community School district for the 2013-14 school year, pending a formal building assignment.

8 Metro players make all-state softball

Eight players from Metro area high schools have been named to the 2013 all-state softball teams, the Iowa Girls Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

Maddie Hansen, Alyssa Olson, Kaitlyn Davidson and Dani Stromert from Cedar Rapids Jefferson made the Class 5A all-state team.

Mallory Jones and Katie Kuch of Cedar Rapids Prairie also made the Class 5A all-state team.

Erin Drahozal and Sydney Galligan of Xavier were named to the Class 4A all-state team.

Hansen, a sophomore catcher for the J-Hawks, was named first team all-state in Class 5A. She hit .500 with seven home runs and 69 RBIs. Hansen led the Mississippi Valley Conference and Class 5A in RBIs and finished second overall in the state.

Olson, a sophomore pitcher for the J-Hawks, also was named first team all-state in Class 5A. She compiled a 21-4 record and 1.03 ERA, with 237 strikeouts in 161 1/3 innings.

Drahozal, a sophomore pitcher and designated hitter, made first team all-state in Class 4A. She had a 20-6 record and 2.25 ERA as a pitcher and hit .424 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs as a hitter.

Jones, a sophomore shortstop for Prairie, made second team all-state in Class 5A. She hit .390 with 22 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

Galligan, a senior left fielder for Xavier, made second team all-state in Class 4A. She hit .431 with 22 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

Kuch, a senior pitcher at Prairie, made third team all-state in Class 5A. She went 22-9 with a 22-9 record, 2.36 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 205 innings.

Davidson, a senior second baseman for Jefferson, made third team all-state in Class 5A. She hit .403 with one home run and 21 RBIs.

Stromert, a senior center fielder, made third team all-state in Class 5A. She hit .378 with 13 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

Jefferson finished with a 33-12 record and placed fifth at the Class 5A state tournament. Prairie finished 29-16 and placed sixth at the Class 5A state tournament. Xavier finished 29-12 and won the Valley Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

All four Metro seniors on the all-state teams plan to play softball in college. Galligan is headed to Luther, Kuch is going to Wartburg, Davidson is going to Mount Mercy and Stromert will join Loras.

Furnish wins Iowa Women's Amateur

MASON CITY - Megan Furnish shot a final round 76 Wednesday to capture the 2013 Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship at Mason City Country Club.

Furnish, who came into the final round tied with Jenny Graeser, finished with a total of 13-over-par 229, good enough for a two shot win over Alex Zenor of Cedar Rapids.  Zenor shot a final round best 74 to jump into second place.

Furnish is a Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad and Zenor graduated from Kennedy.
