Hanna shines in Shrine Bowl

CEDAR FALLS - One quarterback had a day he will always remember. Another had one he would like to forget.

But for both Cedar Rapids Prairie's Jace Hanna and Cedar Rapids Xavier's Reggie Schulte, Saturday's 41st edition of the Shrine Bowl at the UNI-Dome was put in the proper perspective as just one part of a special week.

Hanna was likely playing football for the final time. He completed a pair of touchdown passes of 32 yards each to West Des Moines Valley's Clint Boffeli as the South rolled to a 28-0 win over the North before an estimate crowd of 3,500 at the UNI-Dome.

On the other side of the field, it wasn't the best of days for Schulte. He was under constant pressure from a swarming South defense and ended up throwing five interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. He completed just 9-of-25 passes for 91 yards.

“The University of Northern Iowa is proud to continue our long-standing relationship with the IHSAA and its member Iowa high schools,” UNI President Bill Ruud said. “The UNI-Dome is the ultimate destination for thousands of high school football players, their coaches, families and friends.

"We are pleased to host the playoffs at a venue that provides a positive athletic experience. While high school students and families are on campus this fall for the playoffs, we invite them to our Open Houses, which will provide an opportunity to tour campus, meet faculty and visit the Cedar Valley community.”

MVC wants study of IHSAA, IGHSAU merger

The Mississippi Valley Conference has encouraged the governing bodies for high school athletics in Iowa to consider studying a possible merger of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The conference has not taken a stand on whether a merger should happen, but league officials would like the IHSAA and IGHSAU to study the pros and cons.

Marla Padget, the principal at Waterloo East High School and MVC president for the 2012-13 school year, sent a letter to Rick Wulkow, the executive director of the IHSAA, and to Mike Dick, the executive director of the IGHSAU, informing them of the league's desires.
